Could you post how fast your computer is and how long you've had it?
Stick with 2 brands: IBM and Maxtor DiamondMax. If it's not a DiamondMax then don't get it. How big do you want your new HD to be and how much are you willing to spend? You can get an IBM 15Gig 7200rpm drive for $113 (subtract $10 from a coupon that I have yet to try) from onvia.com. Or you can go with the Maxtor DiamondMax 15gig 7200rpm drive for $99.99. The coupon is for an order of $100 or more so since onvia does not charge tax or shipping I don't know if you cuold use the coupon on the Maxtor drive (don't call and ask them or they might void the coupon). If the coupon is valid then pickup the IBM drive. Spend $30 more and get a IBM 30Gig hard drive. It just depends on how much space you want. |

thanx for the info apex!
I bought my Hp pavilion about a year ago. The model number is 4445 and is actually pretty slow. it's 366Mhz i think and 68MB memory and it only has 4 gig. so 10 to 20 GiG would be nice and I'm willing to spend around $100 to $150. But I'm scared that adding a new harddrive would just make my computer slower or it'll just mess it up even more. My computer crashes alot. But if you think maxtor or ibm is good, I'll think about getting it. What does 7200rpm stand for? Sorry, I'm not very familiar with stuff like that =) |

rpm is revolutions per minute sunnybaby. The higher it is the faster the hard drive platters spin.

Do you have any friends who might know a lot about computers? Better yet, if you're older then do you have any friends whose kids know a lot
?Obviously adding a new harddrive will not solve any of your problems because your computer is crashing on the current configuration that your PC has. I suggest trying to get the problem fixed (for FREE. This is done by getting friends to do it, not computer "mechanics" ) before adding the harddrive. If you'r budget is $100-$150, then I'd recommend either the IBM 15Gig 7200rpm for $113.53 or the Maxtor DiamondMax DiamondMax Plus 40 EIDE ULTR-DM/66 7200rpm for $127.32 both from www.onvia.com. I myself prefer IBM drives even though they are a little more expensive because I've had no problems whatsoever with my 2 ibm drives (10G and 20& 7200rpm). I never trusted Maxtor before the DiamondMax drives but they seem to be popular for their price. I can't comment on their newer drives because I've never owned one. Hope this helps. |

Definitely the Hard drive should not slow down your system. But before you do that, you'll want to reformat your hard drive and re-install windows. That should solve your problem with the system crashing a lot. If you are a little wary of doing the fdisk, format, re-install yourself. I believe hp's come with rescue discs yes/no? If they still provide those, then use that to re-install everything. That should help the crashing.

Called onvia.com today to inquire about the ETA of several items. They are out of the IBM 15G 7200rpm drive and there is no manufacturer ETA. I need a drive for my bro's computer so if anyone knows where else to get an inexpensive IBM let me know
