A coworker of mine just built a system with an FIC AZ11 and an AMD Duron 700. I couldn't believe how well it performed, and it was much less than a same-speed Intel system would have been.

If you are starting from scratch, go to pricewatch and type in barebones 700 or barebones 800 or whatever speed you want and you would be amazed at how much you can get as a package versus buying the components separately. And the units are assembled, ready for a hard drive and memory. Maybe someone here has experience buying these packages, but to me, they seem like a good deal

Well, I am not sure if I expressed myself correctly, but I just want to know which brand has better performance for a good deal, thats is either amd, or intel pentium or celerons...
thanks |

Duron has the best price/preformance ratio if you're not overclocking. Celeron is best if you are.

Duron's are the way to go. If you're lucky enough to get an unlocked chip, you can over clock at 600 MHz up to 950 MHz with ease. Even if it is locked there are ways to bypass it.

The Duron is the best current choice for the best performace to price ratio. And you can unlock them and overclock and gaon more performance.

If your going to go with a Duron or socketed Thunderbird Athlon then use Abit's KT7 or Asus's A7v for the motherboard pirulo. FIC does not have a good reputation for making good motherboards. |

Check out www.firingsquad.com for a price/performance review on the Athlon Thunderbirds. The price is low enough on those guys to warrant getting one over a Duron.

Thanks guys...but do u guys thin kthat performance wise the athlons are better than intel??????..well the prices are not so off, I found a pentium III, 800eb for 285...and the athlon 800 is 240, not much of a difference...

Thunderbird Athlons and Coppermine Pentium III's are neck and neck in terms of performance pirulo. Sometimes the Thunderbird Athlon wins the contest and sometimes the Coppermine Pentium III wins.
Some tips: If you go with the Athlon make sure to get an Athlon compatible power supply and Athlon compatible memory. Most of the problems people have with Athlons can be avoided by choosing the right parts. If your going to get the Pentium III go with the Pentium 800e over the Pentium III 800eb. This is assuming your into overclocking. The Pentium 800e supports a 100Mhz system bus speed while the Pentium III 800eb supports a 133Mhz system bus speed. It would be easier to overclock the 800e and get more speed out of it compared to the 800eb. Of course you can also ovreclock the Athlon. ![]() As for which processor I would choose well I don't have to choose. Athlon motherboards in general co$t more than Pentium III motherboards. If it wasn't for AMD these processors wouldn't be so cheap now. |

AMD cpus are still nit picky about everything. Stop by AMD's config page to make sure what you're getting is all compatible with each other(BTW, get a 300W power supply for either P3 or AMD- www.mychaseshop.com Antec KS282 for $60.71)

You can get the Antec 300W power supply got apex talked about (the PP303X) at Buycomp for $37.04
My chase shop seems to have added KS282 in front of some of the power supplies they sell. http://www.antec-inc.com/product/powers/pp303x.html |

Stop by this page and browse the CPU and Motherboard Technologia forum and see if anything helps there. A lot of the responses I got from there helped me decide what I would build for my brother's computer. Here's the link

You guys forgot to mention bus speeds. Athlons supports a 200mhz bus speed whereas PIII's only support 133mhz. With a PIII its like a bottleneck performance, lots of speed going through a tiny hole. Once 200mhz memory is out, there will be no competition between the two.

And when is 200Mhz memory going to be out? After all we just saw the release of 150Mhz memory. We'll be switching to DDR memory in another 9 months.

DDRRAM= Double Data Rate SDRAM.
Hey Gus, go to this webpage \http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/99q3/990809/athlon-27.html Tom does tons of hardware reviews, this page shows you benchmarks for Athlons vs PIII's. Athlon beat the PIII in just about every benchmark except for one. Pirulo is looking for the fastest processor for least amount of money. Athlon is clearly a better choice. It's faster, and it's cheaper! He should be wondering whether to get a Duron or an Athlon or TB. I suggest paying just a bit more and getting an Athlon or TB. |

Okay, yes the prices of motherboards are a bit more expensive, but it's still much cheaper. I gathered these prices from a local shop here in San Diego. Instead of wasting time overclocking a PIII, simply buy a faster Athlon than a comparably priced PIII. And yes athlons can be overclocked too, just a bit harder. http://www.chipsandmemory.com
AMD A7 And ASUS A7V Bundle MOTHERBOARD, CPU, CPU COOLING FAN A7 950 MHZ T-Bird $509 A7 1000 MHZ T-Bird $639 OR INTEL CPU And ECS 6BAP Bundle MOTHERBOARD, CPU, CPU COOLING FAN PIII 933EB MHZ $729 PIII 1000EB MHZ $1129 |

Athlon's may be cheaper but in a lot of cases the price difference you see between the athlon/pIII and duron/celeron is made up in the higher cost of athlon motherboards... i went the pIII route knowing i could get a much cheaper board and easier overclock even if the athlon was much cheaper, after the overclock and difference in motherboard prices i think i ended up saving money...
