What's the best deal for Cable/Satellite and Internet in San Diego? Anybody I should stay away from?
Thanks, Jeff. |

In San Diego, for cable tv, you're pretty much limited to going with whatever company (Time Warner, Cox, Adelphia) that services your area. You don't really get to pick which one, your address determines that for you. What part of town are you in?

I can't personally vouch for Cox as I'm in Time Warner country, but my parents have had Cox's non-digital cable (channels 2-99) and high speed internet for years and pay around $80/month for that. They have had no issues or complaints with their service, but then again they don't have DVR, HDTV, PPV, etc...
Take a look at www.mysandiegomove.com to compare side by side various packages available at your address. |

Cox seems to be around $110 a month, for internet, phone service, digital cable w/ HBO. Plus around another $75-100 for installation/equipment.
I like my TV but daamn! Is this the going rate? I've always split it with roommates before and never noticed the combined rates. Any more advice? |

I think that's a really good combo price for what you are getting... Is that an introductory/teaser rate (like only for the first 6 months) or is that their "regular" price? I'm paying almost that much with Time Warner for the exact same stuff *without* the phone.
Also, if you do decide to go with cable, you can get a better deal if you haggle with them like it's a used car. Call up Cox and tell them "I'm thinking of subscribing to DirecTV but before I do, I want to see if you guys can offer a better deal. I'm interested in HBO, internet, phone, etc..." Most likely, they'll quote you one of the specials advertised on their website. Say, "Yeah, I saw that on your website, but all those installation charges turned me off. Can you waive those?" You should be able to get them significantly reduced if not eliminated. Now ask what the total monthly bill would be, including all fees and taxes. No matter what they quote you, pause a moment and say "Wow, that's more than I would've expected. DirecTv seems to be the better value. But you know what? If you can give me a reduced introductory rate, I'll just go ahead and sign up right now." Does it sound like I've done this before? ![]() |
