Need a new computer
Because of recent events, I find myself without a computer at home. I do not need anything fancy at all. Just a basic PC with an LCD screen. I was hoping to not pay more than $500 for everything, but apparently that's difficult to find. I see the Dimension 5150 with 17" LCD for just $549 after rebate plus tax, shipping, and handling on the front page and was looking for input on that deal. I would even consider something from the dell outlet, but when you add an LCD monitor to the PC, it roughly comes out to the same price.
The Dimension 5150 would work out to $636 total after the rebate, but I was looking for something a little less expensive. I have about $130 worth of things I am returning to Best Buy, and was hoping to apply that toward the purchase of a new computer system, but I would prefer to not get an Emachine. I dont know if they have anything else in the price range/quality I am looking for. Help please? Last edited by adjaw : 11-16-2005 at 08:38 AM. |

Can you afford to wait till the day after Thanksgiving...Black Friday?
Wal-Mart is reported to have on that day HP computers for $399. You can see info on this on a few other threads here on GOT/APEX. |

I saw that, but I have no clue how good an HP is....or the particulars of what is included with that HP. It might just be bare bones, kinda like my old, old Emachine was. My recent computer was a Dell, and had no problems with it in the last 5 months. But it's gone now. |

Don't get an emachine or an HP. Ebay your BB credit (people will pay very very close to face value on some gift cards for some silly reason). Then use that against the Dell deal.
Check again on the refurb site - go there from small business & be sure to check not only the Dimensions, but also Optiplexes & PowerEdge servers (the SC430 makes a good desktop PC, but you'll need an OS for it). You should be able to find a machine for $350 or less pretty easily, & then throw an LCD on there & you're good to go. |

Good point. If money is your most critical item, I'd bet you have some things around the house you no longer need that you can sell via ebay and build up enough in your PayPal account to buy a very good machine via ebay. Also, just this week Dell announced they will (soon?) accept payment for computers via PayPal. |
