Question Firearm Ammunition Online

I need to know websites and brandnames of ammunition that is good and inexpensive over the internet.

As some of you know, I am looking for .40 S&W and .22 (and maybe 1 pk of safety slugs for the .40)

Anyway...

Im just wandering around the internet looking right now...
Are these any good?

Pick up a copy of "Shotgun News"...there are lots of ammo vendors who advertise in there who sell ammo cheap, especially surplus ammo.

CheaperThanDirt is an excellent source, as well. I got spoiled living in Rapid City, SD, a few years back. Black Hills Ammunition is located there and I was able to pick up "blem" ammo for a fraction of the already reasonable BH Ammo regular price...even cheaper once I had a friend who worked at the Ammo plant I usually picked up my .223 ammo a case at a time (1000 rds) and I could get blems for well under $100/case, even for hollowpoint and moly coated stuff.

www.cheaperthandirt.com is a good source for on-line purchase. Also check www.firearmnews.com for vendors that might be in your area.

Ok, lets say I go with cheaperthandirt... I am still clueless which to pick
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ctd/a...K1SDFUTDR34R49

Do I want the cheapest non-corrosive round I can find for practicing with it? And maybe a small box for "real" situations?
Help me out here!

I'd just pick up a bunch of FMJ 165 or 180 grain stuff for plinking/range shooting--whatever is cheapest. You can't really go too wrong here.

Here's the cheapest stuff that CTD sells, the Wolf brand stuff: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ctd/p...K1SDFUTDR34R49

For self defense, I'm not a big fan of the Glaser stuff unless wall penetration was a BIG factor (like living in an apartment or something). I use Cor-Bon ammo in ALL my self-defense/carry guns. It is accurate, POWERFUL and reliable. I subscribe to the lighter&faster school of thought, vs. the heavier/slower camp. I use the 135 grain .40 S&W stuff--nearly .357 Magnum ballistics (Which, incidentally, is rated the #1 1-shot stop cartridge based on study of thousands of actual shootings by ballistics gurus Marshall and Sanow at 96%... http://www.handloads.com/misc/stoppi...r=5&Weight=125 ). Lots of good info on Cor-Bon's site. Here's a link to their many self defense offerings: http://mysite.elixirlabs.com/index.p...2665&page=1609

Bottom line: Practice until your skill with the weapon is good enough to defend your life...skill and experience are way more important than what round your gun is loaded with...

Enjoy shooting it!

I would recommend staying away from Wolf stuff. Most of it is steel jacketed, not brass. This can cause some serious damage to the barrel and rifling of your gun. I've also been told by those in the know that they use some pretty nasty powder that clogs up your gun much faster than normal.

Oh, and for home defense, it's hard to beat a box of Federal Hydra-Shox. About $20 a box for 50 rds, but for stopping power, it's tough to beat. I buy a box, load a clip and keep it in the nightstand.

The Wolf brand ammo is steel cased, but they use regular copper clad FMJ bullets, at least in the dozen or so boxes that I've shot. I don't disagree with you about the powder, although I find that the brand of powder often varies from lot to lot, especially with the bargain brands...When loaded with certain kinds of powder, it certainly can make an awful mess. The new range ammo (lead free version of the M193 round) that the military uses for M-16 training is the worst I have ever shot--it makes the most filthy, greasy, gritty mess you could imagine...even worse than shooting the M200 blank ammo.

I agree 100% with the Hydra-Shok recommendation...It used to be the only thing I would use in my carry guns before I went to Cor-Bon. What gave the Cor-Bon the edge for me is that all my guns shoot MUCH more accurately with it. Of course, that varies gun-to-gun, as well, so the best way to find out what your gun prefers is to pick up a box of each and shoot... That's the fun part anyhow!
