well after waiting hmmmm lets see now... 4 months for Pacfic Bell to activate my DSL I've decided I'm sick and tired of this. Can anyone make a DSL recomendation for a company that can actually provide DSL for the Bay Area? More specifically East Bay (more specifically El Sobrante?)

Strangely enough the Banner at the top of the page right now is for Pacific Bell DSL. How ironic. Want to hear a horror story of DSL installation? we have been waiting 4 months for them to activate our line. Hardware is done, lines are ready, they just cant seem to flip the switch. oh, and its been 4 months of waiting since their PROMISED connection date. Im not counting the wait before equipment and stuff.

If anyone has had good success and can recomend someone, Im all ears. esspecially if the price is low!

Thumbs up Concentric worked out for me, similar problems with PacHell

After PacHell not showing up twice I tried Concentric (just merged with NextLink) and had it installed in under 2 weeks. Ironically PacHell had to come out to my house once to inspect my line before the Concentric DSL when in, and PacHell showed up on time (well within the 5 hour window they gave me). Concentric's DSL goes through Covad in the Bay Area. You get a lot for the price but hopefully it'll get even cheaper because of merging with a telco.

608Kbps / 128Kbps -- $69 per month
1.5Mbps / 384 Kbps -- $89 per month
Four static IP addresses
Web Hosting
Five e-mail boxes

Definitely not pacbell, one of the most horrible service reps and overall bad service. Its even sad when they have to lure somebody to get DSL by offering a computer with it (a compaq at that).

Well i've had luck with pacbell. I got in on one of their promotions . Free installation & modem $39.99 monthly for 1.5mbps/128 kbps.

The guy who came to install the dsl was a total bozo. Dint know anything and he ended up giving me a 5 port hub and a 10/100 pc card for my laptop in addition to the nic for my desktop.

Best of all i get d/load speeds of 1.7-2.0 mbps which is higher than their rated speeds . I'm not complaining :-)..

I've never had any problems with Pacbell either. I guess it's because I had it installed over a year ago before this latest consumer craze to get broadband access at home. I called, they set an appointment within 3 weeks and came on the exact day at almost the exact time. The tech was pretty knowledgeable and gave me a PC card for my laptop since I already had a NIC in my desktop. The whole thing took only 15 minutes. I've never experienced an outage. It's worked without fail this entire time. The only complaint I have is with their e-mail, but I don't use their mail servers for my primary address anyway.

The only problems I have with DSL (I'm running RoadRunner Cable Modem at home) is that whenever someone using DSL connects to me to transfer files, we usually experience packet loss and major slowage. Don't know why, but this happens with every DSL user I connect to, or that connects to me.

PacBell is having issues right now. A friend of mine and his dad work for them and they've had all sorts of budget problems and cutbacks. Apparently some of their deals w/ cell phones and DSL have gotten more popular than anticipated. They've even screwed up my cell phone service. I hope they get their **** together soon though. I'm supposed to have DSL installed soon and their the only company in my area.
