Complete this sequence:

??, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, ??

And, no, the answers are NOT 18 and 9!

Now this one is no joke.

Formula describing the "beer goggles" effect:
Quote:

  • An = number of units of alcohol consumed
  • S = smokiness of the room (graded from 0-10, where 0 clear air; 10 extremely smoky)
  • L = luminance of 'person of interest' (candelas per square metre; typically 1 pitch black; 150 as seen in normal room lighting)
  • Vo = Snellen visual acuity (6/6 normal; 6/12 just meets driving standard)
  • d = distance from 'person of interest' (metres; 0.5 to 3 metres)

A formula rating of less than one means no effect. Between one and 50 the person you would normally find unattractive appears less "visually offensive".

Non-appealing people become suddenly attractive between 51 and 100. At more than 100, someone not considered attractive looks like a super model.

but using the logical OR doesn't work either.

you can't put an 18 or 9 either end.

18 and 9 logically complete the sequence. Whether or not that's the answer you're looking for is an entirely different issue.

no you haven't as a teacher you should know that a question itself makes all the difference, with the lack of information in the stem the only logical completion of the sequence is 18 and 9. If any additional info was given, then we would be able to solve it otherwise

Younger geeks might not be as familiar with this one.

Parity bit. That's my hint.

Makes about as much sense as Graf
I'm also going to propose
18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 0

That's correct and he's good. It has something to do with subtraction of two numbers and coming out with a prime number.

That's not the reason I'm aware of. Those look like octal numbers to me...

All the numbers are 16 (decimal). What is changing is the base. So, 20 is correct for the first number (base 8). After 10 (in the base 16 spot), and following the hex system of using letters after 9, you would put "g" (base 17).

Now I wish I read your hint. I was guessing the sequence was nonyl.. that or the digits added up to 0,1,2,3,4...

So how is it not 18 and 9 again?

18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 09
-
11 10 09 08 07 06 05 04 03 02

=
07 07 07 07 07 07 07 07 07 07

20 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 07
-
13 12 11 10 09 08 07 06 05 04

=
07 05 05 05 05 05 05 05 05 03

You get a prime number either way, it just depends on which two numbers you subtract by.

Heh - that's interesting! Now your "All the numbers are the same" makes so much more sense

Btw, the way I got my sequence was to consider all the numbers as base 8 (octal).

20, 17, 16, ..., 10, 7 is a proper octal progression sequence, that counts down from decimal 16

If anyone wants to verify, open up Microsoft Calculator, switch to Scientific. Type in "16", then select the "Oct" radio button. It should turn into 20. Then subtract one, and keep going.
