A tax for the stupid

...or at least for those bad at math. That's how I view the lottery.

But I just cant help buy buy tickets occasionally.

I missed the drawing on TV, and its been at least 20min since and the megamillions site hasnt updated yet. In this day and age it should be posted as soon as the last ball drops.

we have a lotto pool at work. i think most people put in their buck not cuz they truly believe they can win, but as insurance in case the pool does win - no one wants to be the idiot sitting at work while his/her co-workers are off enjoying their millions!

when i play the lotto...i don't expect to win...

you're not paying to win...you're paying for the thoughts and day dreams of you winning and having all that money.

Obviously one should never expect to win. Or even come close, for that matter.

But someone wins ALL THE TIME. I think that's what keeps people playing. There are so many Mega Lotteries out there (Mega Millions, PowerBall, etc.) that people hit every few weeks or months; it's enough to "keep the dream alive" that someday it might be them.

From a purely statistical standpoint, if half of what the lottery take in is turned back into prizes and half to whatever else they spend it on, the best you can expect in the long term is to get half of your money back. A lottery is a voluntary regressive tax. People at lower levels of income tend to spend a larger portion of their income on it than people at higher incomes.
And no, I do not play.

I play occasionally (Powerball.) Typically I'll buy one ticket (if I remember) when it goes over $100 million, and maybe 5 when it goes over 200. I've won $5 or so before. That's about it.

I play the lotto all the time buy only maybe 5 bucks a month. It's not like no one ever wins. Someone wins wins eventually. I just don't spend more than I could afford. I do the same if I went to a casino. I bring only so much I can afford to lose and not but myself in some financial crunch.

I'm just buying my dream for $2-$4/week. I don't think I'm going to win but it feels good to dream.

Eh, I don't buy here in Korea, but I bought every now and then back in Cali. The most I won was 4 out of 6 numbers equaling a whopping $54 bucks, or thereabouts.

It's fun, and a great way to sleep a "what if" dream, so why not?

I usually don't jump in office pools. I figure if everyone else wins, I become head of the department

I would get more enjoyment from lighting a dollar bill on fire and watching it burn than putting it towards a lottery pool at work.

Yeah, but that's an awfully improbable "will". I like to think as myself as the one who is laughing at all the other fools 99.99999999999999% of the time.

awesome!

i never buy the "real" lottery tickets... because i know i will be that poor dumb ******* you hear about on cnn who bought the winning ticket and lost it.

i do occasionally buy scratch-off tickets, maybe 10-15 in my life, and so far they always win between 10 and 100 dollars. the $100 i scratched off at a grocery store... as my 3 best friends made fun of me for buying one... and we were buying party supplies and on our way to the liquor store next. oh, yeah... we upgraded the liquor purchases
