OMG Halloween -what a drag.

Some church three streets up from me decided to host a fright night/ halloween party/ haunted house thing in an old CVS building..so me and the neighbors only got about 20 kids all night. Needless to say, the effects we set up this year were totally wasted

Wow Obby... you went all out!!!

Yeah... Halloween isn't what it used to be. Pretty much, for "safety reasons" going to churches and to the mall seem to be better options than canvassing neighborhoods for candy.

Sad but true fact... I guess our "innocence" is lost. (I took DFJ to a church sponsored Halloween event myself. They had all kinds of candy, hot dogs, games and a hay ride and the kids had a blast.)

I wish I could stop by Obby's house... sounds like she got it goin' on over there.

Sorry Obby!

We had a good turn out. We bought about 1200 pieces of candy - we have about 300 left after handing out 2-4 pieces per kid. Last year I bought the sameish and ran out. I have decided next year to go with full size bars. I would love to make popcorn balls for Halloween, but people here kinda frown on homemade goodies. They don't know what they are missing.

Oooo I love popcorn balls..mmmmm
I had TONS of candy (and goodies)left over but I gave it to my other next door neighbor who has 4 kids. I figure they can get all hyped up and drive their parents crazy till Christmas on a sugar high! I did however keep some candy apples for my kids who will be over tomorrow, and a couple pieces of pizza to snack on till the end of the week.

Wow, sorry ta hear obby. Sounds like your setup was better than all I saw tonight. Took the girls through the neighborhood for about 2 hours. They got a full bag each. I'm so tired, I think I'm going to sleep until Thanksgiving.

We had a pretty busy night - about 200 or so kids came by. We're in a bigger subdivision though, so a lot of rural/condo kids are driven in by their parents & it gets pretty crowded.

It rained like crazy an hour after everthing ended, so that was good timing.

So help bring halloween back. There has never been a documented case of anything bad happening to trick or treaters. The only poisoning cases there were, were by family members.

This is the first Halloween for us in our new neighborhood, and we had 100+ kids come to our house. The neighborhood was fully decked out with lots of decorations and spooky sounds coming from everywhere. Overall, it was a great time. Lots of the kids wanted to stroke the hallowiener (who was wearing a big sharkfin suitably befit as a carpet-shark ), who kept jumping out every time I opened the door. Annarchy was dressed in a big orange pumpkin-like one-see and had a good time (though at 5 1/2 months she obviously didn't understand what was going on).

Sorry mang... but door-to-door trick or treating is becoming a thing of the past.

Pretty much, we as a society don't seem live in unified "NEIGHBORhoods" anymore. More or less, many of us don't even know the folks who live around us and pretty much don't trust them enough to send our kids out "free range" anymore.

The age of innocence has passed...

DFJ is 7 now, and I still won't let him go outside and play by himself without supervision. When I was 7 I was up and down my neighborhood... we all knew each other and looked out for each other, but today, only a few folks are "trusted" in my "hood".

I don't see that trend changing anytime soon.

Also, a house at the corner of my street (which was once a very family oriented neighborhood) has become a notorious welfare/drug house..you can't believe the trash that lives there. The landlord who lives out of town keeps tenants in there for about 4 months max, then they move on to other areas once the police get wind of their activites (which takes way too long even though there is a neighborhood watch on my street and the streets around me and these people are reported all the time).
It makes me sad knowing that kids can't be kids anymore..what happened to the days of manhunt and hide and seek around the neighborhood..and halloweens that didn't mean you had to go with a parent and be in your house by 8pm?

Ignorance was bliss?

You need to move to my neighborhood! I've got a CHP and 2 Folsom PD officers on my street, and kids are playing outside all the time. When we were moving in some of the neighborhood kids were raking up the leaves in our front yard, as the previous owners hadn't done it in a while (then I knew this new house might work out ) We have neighborhood BBQs, and most people are outside on the weekend so I talk to my neighbors all the time. I'm glad I moved to a 'smaller' town from L.A. - a town that just happens to have a huge Intel facility, a state prison (Even Johnny Cash sang about Folsom Prison ), large numbers of state office buildings and two large reservoirs . Paymaster lives here too, so he can back up what I'm saying.

My old neighborhood in L.A. was like what you described, which was one of the reasons why I moved the family out.

Honestly, on my salary, I'm staying put for now.

Movin' to the 'Burbs is outside of my reach right now... but I can still dream I suppose.

whats even worse than a crappy Halloween are neighbors who still have their decorations up the DAY AFTER...because they are too busy racing to the stores to buy marked down candy instead of taking down their cheezy dollar store garlands.

I only had 4 visits all night.
It's too bad parents live in fear. The kids that were out and about had parents walking with them, and would hang out at the curb as the kids went knocking. I remember when my parents let me and the friends start going by ourselves. The rules were simple: don't go inside, take a flashlight and don't egg anyone.
I miss those days.

Wow, that sucks. I guess it just depends on where you are, 'cuz my neighborhood is a great place, and I don't think twice about my kids going down the street to the neighbors or door to door trick or treating.

I only had 14 kids.

But my mother shut the lights off when she saw cars dropping off 15-16 year olds in her neighborhood.
