Im not sure Id trust that magazine. They were caught a few times not being honest with the car section.

Greetings Burzhui! Haven't seen you in a while. Consumer Reports used to be THE thing you checked out at the library if you wanted to buy something- usually appliances or cars. But that was because they were the ONLY thing around besides friends and sales people. The internet is great because you can get feedback and find out if the info is true or not (at least get more opinions on the subject!).
Their list of desirable qualities may not match yours and their list of comparisons are usually small (I saw one they did on wine and they had only like six listed- a couple cheap ones, a mid price and a higer one "Consumer Reports Top Ten!" but even the worst on their list was also top ten since the list was fewer than ten. I never consider that anymore.

I used CR and did a fair amount of research before I bought the new appliances for my house this past summer.
For me, the right mix of reliability, function, and looks landed me with Frigidaire. Sears' Kenmore line also gets very good reviews in the reliability department.

When did this happen? I haven't had subscription for at least 2 years, so I could have missed it. I am a little surprised and I would like to know more, so I can decide if I want to dismiss them as one of my sources. Also, I would like to know, so I can tell others. |

I cant find anything online about it, but i recall them being caught not actually testing toyota's reliability, and just giving them high marks by default. The other issue was with a car, but quite a while back. |

There have been a bunch of people & articles that have discredited CR's 'findings', but they're pretty good at squashing them. IMHO, CR is a publication to be avoided, especially considering you can generally find all sorts of (unbiased) product reviews & comparisons on the web for free.
Here's a portion of a website that was created back in 1999 that used to have TONS of articles on all of CRs shady practices - http://www.junkscience.com/consumer/consumer_index.html If I remember correctly, they were sued & forced to remove it. Here are a few more: http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/06/c...ises-eyebrows/ http://www.allpar.com/cr.html http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16696069/ http://www.rfidjournal.com/article/articleview/2336 http://blog.ultimateavmag.com/fredmanteghian/022407CR/ http://blog.washingtonpost.com/secur...onsumer_1.html Use the google, there are TONS more out there. |

I really think a lot of those links are sour grapes by the auto industry. I do agree that CR could use more scientific measurements and I also agree that a lot of their ratings are subjective but what are you going to do?
Plus the US auto industry has pratically paid off Car and Driver to praise them every step of the way. That Car and Driver TV show makes me want to puke.Last edited by guiseppewv : 11-07-2008 at 08:43 AM. |

It's possible, but only the first 2 links are auto-related... the rest are complaints about their consumer goods reviews.
