I'm going to LA on Labor Day and looking for things to do. According to google maps I'll be pretty close to Dodgers stadium. Is a metro ride from lax to I guess 7th/Civic center wise? Is the metro system wise in general?
I'm looking at Universal Studios since there's also a metro there and some stops in Hollywood. I rather take the metro and not drive since I've never been to LA although I hear it competes quite well with DC traffic. Is Disneyland metro friendly or definitely a car rental trip? How's the Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Tokyo, Little Italy places?

Your best bet is to take Fly Away from LAX to Union Station. Train stops a lot and you have to take like 3 of them to get to Down Town. Fly Away bus is like 4 bucks. Then take the red line 2 stops to 7th/civic center. 1.25
Metro works fine but it doesn't run very late. Like it closes at 1 am so if you are partying you might get stuck. Dodger stadium isn't really near a stop, I guess China town stop on the Gold line and then walk or bus. or a quick cab ride. Chinatown is good dim sum and food and a little historic. Korea town again has good food but nothing major. Little Tokyo is the most historic district with museums and stuff. Also look up museum row in down town cause thats where the interesting stuff is. If you like art and clubs and bars, thats the spot. Red line will take you right to Universal City. And a tram takes you to the city walk, and universal studios and such. Disney Land is like 45 minuets south east of down town and requires a car. Bus would take forever.

I'm a big fan of Little Tokyo, lots of good food there. Koreatown can be hit or miss some areas aren't that nice, Chinatown is kitschy, but fun to walk around.
Are you looking for touristy things? Food? Sights?

Get you some In N Out burger. Reach the beach(s). Santa Monica pier should do it for you, but Venice is more interesting. Melrose for some shopping and checking out people/things. Hollywood sign, and go to see the stars...
Oh and you could stop by Staples Center and see where the greatest sports franchise in the history of all of sports plays/the NBA Champs/your Los Angeles Lakers. There's a nifty Magic Johnson statue you can take your picture with.

Yes I should do the In-N-Out burger. I've heard of it but never eaten there. The Magic Castle looks like a cool thing to do but I need to be a member or guest of a member. I'll need like 4 guest passes. I'm not sure how the wife would like the coffee shop thing. Hmm...Maybe I can tell her it's an anime themed coffee shop. Thanks for the ideas and yes getting shot did cross my mind. I really only have 3 full days and one of the days is watching my brother and another friend play in a volleyball tourney on Saturday.

Why don't you hook a local brother up? In N out is good. One is near LAX. Like 2 blocks but you need a cab or car to get there. |

Too bad you aren't here yet. Lakers championship parade is tomorrow! Yeah I know, it would have been a great experience for ya.
Since you will be by Dodger stadium, you will be very close to good chinese food/chinatown. They also have some decent pho places too. If you do go Ctown and want mexican, try king taco. Get their all meat/carne asada burrito with hot sauce on the side. Best burrito in town. |

don't forget the beaches! OC is a bit far but laguna, balboa, and corona del mar are so nice... venice beach is kinda cool cause of all the street vendors... but kinda ghetto...
disneyland from your hotel is about 45 min drive w.o traffic... might be a better idea for a rental... |

there are such better burgers in LA. In-n-out is a great fast food burger, but i would much rather hit up the counter or even fatburger...

I rented a car for about $125 from Wednesday night to Monday morning. I'm looking at either Disneyland or Universal Studios as an all day thing. I'm also looking at restaurants that take the restaurant.com gift certs that are 80% off plus an additional % off without the no weekend restriction. The Pacific Coast Highway is also an option I've been told and the sunset at some beach but I forgot which one. There seems to be a ton of beaches. I also submitted a request to get tickets to the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien by random email lottery.

Have time to do both Disney and Universal? Disney has their Downtown Disney and Universal has the Citywalk where you'll be able to grab some eats after visiting the parks. Not sure if those restaurants participate in the coupon books and what not, but it would make your life convenient rather than driving from place to place. If you decide to eat at the Universal Citywalk, i would recommend Cafe Tu Tu Tango. |

I have only been to LA a couple of times. About the only thing I remember besides the traffic is that everything is farther than it looks on a map. It took four hours to drive back to San Diego. (what- about 120 miles?)

Well I'm back. I can honestly say I won't be going back any time soon. The traffic is pretty bad no matter what time of the day or night it seems. The roads seem to branch off again and again with little warning until your right at the ramp and the sign. Maybe I'm bitter because I'm sure I got caught on a speed camera coming off 110 to Hill street and maybe another on 10 East that said meter on but could not decipher the meaning until I blew thru the red light like the 2 other cars in front of me.
The price of food was cheap-ish and reasonable but maybe I was going to the wrong places because it lacked some flavor or I'm fat and used to sodium. In-N-Out Burger wasn't that great but it wasn't that bad. I wanted to try a Carls Jr. Santa Monica Pier and 3rd Street Promenade was really nice as was the Walk of Fame. Griffith Observatory was nice stop to see the Hollywood sign and view of LA. Rodeo shopping area was nice. The La Brea museum was good too and I should have bought some souvenir tar vials. Oh well. |

carl's jr = hardees on the east coast. if you've gone to hardees, you've gone to carl's jr.
seems like you just stuck to touristy things. i don't know if that's gonna be all that fun. and yeah, traffic sucks everywhere. |

I did drive out to Valley Drive and eat at Noodle World. It took me a while b/c Garmin had me navigate through Cal State parking lots. Also went to Chinatown and Koreatown to this place called BCD Tofu House. I had this beef bowl at this chain called Yoshimurato or something. Nasty. |

Wat did you say about In & Out? Go back to white castle. You are dead to me. Glad you had an ok time. Navigating around here sucks and traffic is no joke. Sorry about your food selection. You should have posted before trying Yoshi beef bowl. It used to be decent and cheap like 10+ years ago. Now it's just cheap and you get what you pay for. You didn't go to any of the more authentic restaurants or J town for food? Food is good in LA now. Even good food off of some roach coaches (Kogi is not bad). |
