identity theft?

My GF was trying to increase her credit line when her bank told her that she had a 90-days late notice on her credit report from Bally's Fitness Club. The bank told her to call up the credit beureau and deal with the problem. She has never been a member there, so she first called up the fitness club to see if she could find out if and who has signed up with her identity. They said there was no member information under her name and that once again she would have to deal directly with the credit beureaus about the delinquency on her credit report. She's in the process of requesting a credit report and will call the credit beureaus to confirm the nature of the problem. We're guessing it's not a credit card number leak but rather a social security number leak.

After talking with the credit beureaus, what are the next steps to take? Is there any way to resolve this without leaving a blemish on her credit rating? Can the credit beureaus resolve this or will we need to file a police report?

Ahhhh. How convenient!! My life quality has been hovering around 0 for a while and I've been meaning to knock it down to negative 10,000. Thanks a$$hole!

The Credit Bureaus will ask her to file paperwork disputing information on her credit report. From there, the bureaus should be able to provide enough information as to what other steps she should take.

you can do disputes online with the 3 bureaus. you can get one of those free things to check it, and cancel within a week or whatever the trial period is. or you can deal directly with them to get 1 report.

check with the bank to be sure that if the disputes come back in her favor that she won't get dinged. it seems that every time someone looks at your report, it counts as an inquiry. then every time you apply and don't get what you apply for it counts, too.

If inquiries are done around the same time frame, it only counts as if 1 inquiry was made (at least that's my understanding)

thats correct
there can be several with <i think a week> and it only coutns as one. This is becuase when you use a lender for a bank loan, car house, whatever they often check rates with several companies, this will cuase several inquireis

It's most likely someone fat-fingered a SS# and accidentally typed your GF's. That's infinitesimally more likely than identity theft.

Don't do that. Get your free government-mandated free credit reports at www.annualcreditreport.com.

Each religion has got their own way of making you feel like a victim. The Christians say 'you are a sinner', and you better just zip up your trousers and give the money to the pope and we'll give you a room up in the hotel in the sky.

i was advised that when you file a dispute, the credit bureau contacts the company that has the negative report filed against you. it is then up to the company to produce proof of the event. if they don't provide the proof, then it's supposed to come off automatically within like a month.

if they're refusing to remove it from your report, then they should know who it is that's filing this. you should be able to get this information from them.

The credit reporting agencies don't deny or approve anybody's claim. They simply report what information they're given.

When you dispute an item on your credit report, the creditor has 30 days to affirm that claim. If they don't, it drops off your report. However, the longer you let stuff sit, the more likely it is to be re-reported again in the future. This is especially true if that debt has been sold to a third-party collector.

That's why people need to stay on top of their credit reports.
