Things to do in San Diego
Well, seeing as how I still have a couple weeks of holiday time, I was thinking of taking a trip down to the States. I've only been to Portland, and I want to see more.
![]() I was thinking of heading to San Diego, but was curious what kinds of things there are to do over there. I know there's the Zoo (and that's definitely on my list of stops), but more advice would be helpful. I don't drive, so if there's a decent transit system that would be awesome. ![]()

Seaworld, Wild Animal Park, Old Town is great. You can take the bus anywhere.

San Diego's public transportation is pretty decent, but if you want to experience a new city with the luxuries of public transportation, may I recommend San Francisco instead. Depending on how much time you want to spend here in the States, you could definitely do both! Have you ever been to Seattle? Great city to visit for a couple days, but you would need a car if you wanted to hit up some of the hiking trails and fisherman areas. You could do a whole west coast tour. SD to SF to Seattle. Since you don't drive, stay the heck away from Los Angeles. |

I'd probably book a 1-week trip or so, so I don't know how feasible both cities would be. I would definitely like to check out San Francisco at some point as well. |

Without driving (I don't drive) the Wild Animal Park would be a bit out of reach (I checked it out- it would take me over three hours each direction and that includes not missing any connections!). They now basically sell day passes for the transit system- $5 a day. If you came to San Diego I would stay near Downtown- lots to see and do there- Seaport Village (tourist spot but nice), boats on the waterfront- includes a small Russian sub, the Star of India (listed as the oldest ship still in use), the HMS Surprise which was in the Russel Crowe movie "Master and Commander" and the retired aircraft carrier the USS Midway (one ticket gets you on the other boats but Midway is a seperate admission). From there you can take a ferry across the bay to Coronado Island and catch a bus to the other side and visit the Hotel Del Coronado- largest all wood hotel on the West Coast - Thomas Edison hooked up the first electric lights there- he even had to construct a generator to power them. Nice beach on both sides of the Island.
Downtown is where the action is at night- restauraunts and bars and nightclubs mostly on 5th Street. You can get a direct bus to Balboa Park and the Zoo down there (on Broadway). If I was to choose between Sea World and the Zoo, it would be the zoo no problem. Balboa Park itself is a gorgeous place. There are museums there but in my opinion the collections aren't that great but the park is great to just walk around in. The Point Loma Lighthouse would be another possible visit. La Jolla has beach and wildlife (sea lions and seals) as well as more ritzy businesses. Eat a fish taco someplace. (they are not as nasty as they sound but quite tasty- Rubios would be a good place). Scroll through my photo galleries- they are mostly a travellog for San Diego.
