PC vs. Mac now vs. PC and Mac then

A nice post... the guy actually went through the trouble of finding the old Mac commercials.

I still remember the first Mac ad- the George Orwell spoof which only aired once during the Super Bowl. Yes, I did see it then.

God I hate Macs.

"How in the hell do I change this behavior" is what those machines should be called, because you pretty much are locked into what they design for you.

MOOooooo!

I like Macs, but I would never buy one because they're horribly overpriced for what you get.

But if someone were to buy one for me, I'd happily use it.

However, it IS funny to me that now Apple is turning into the big, evil corporate bully & MS no longer holds that title.

Nearly everyone I know, who owns a Mac, is running a Windows OS. Funny, that.

Also, Zippy, I remember that commercial too, and at the time, had no idea what the heck they were talking about.

They are very underhanded and love to steal/infringe/<insert a nicer word here if you are an Apple fan-boy/girl> on technology developed by others

Oh, OK. In that case, gwilks, you should change your tune. Hard to argue with that very solid and thought provoking arguement.

heh...don't buck LP, he's likely to give me a 3 page rebuttal and a verbal lashing.

I've had a handful of cases over the last few months with apples or apple software that is designed for absolute morons. In locking down capabilities, they remove an admin's ability to configure. Safari doesn't want to use our java agent for NAC. Itunes is a PITA with pulling movies off my iphone, and syncing the subfolders I want. MACs hate using certificates in a windows environment for 2 form factor VPN. There is only 1 way to add more than one album to an ad-hoc playlist on the iphone, and it's a PITA IMO. We've used several different versions of Windows emulation on MACs (VMWare, Parallels), and the overlying MAC software has significant trouble with sharing the same MAC (hardware) address, which is required for our Network Access Control: 1 mac address per non-trunked port. Nevermind how I'm forced to use iTunes to sync things to the iPhone. That sounds more like Bill Gates than Steve Jobs.

There are some decent things about Apple products, but their crap is far from what the commercials advertise.

Their advertising is as deceptive and unfortunately as trusted as Bose.

Their advertising is geared towards those who pretty much don't know how to use a computer. As a fairly advanced PC user, I would never purchase an Apple computer unless I was doing some heavy Audio/Visual work with it.

On a side note, ever since my parents starting using a computer (beginning with Windows 95), i think that switching them over to a Mac and OS X at this point in time would be a HUGE mistake as they would have to learn things over again.

you know... i thought i was the only one thinking this but apparently not...

the few that i know are constantly switching between windows and the mac os that is on their macs... and it all depends on which website they need to be on, who they're chatting with, or even, what they're buying.

it's actually quite common here among our web developers. Big PITA with our security backbone.

I remember seeing an article several months ago where several (~8?) people in an office tried out Windows 7 beta (or maybe it was the RC) and each person did a little write up. Something like 75% of the people were running a macbook or macbook pro.

I agree it is a cool form factor, but if you're just going to run windows anyway, why pay that much extra?

I've actually got my dad running ubuntu now, and he loves it.

Seems like the majority of your list is iTunes/iPhone related problems, which isn't OS related. Or Safari, which also isn't OS related. I agree, Safari sucks, and iTunes is getting kind of bloated.

But I have 2 Macs and 3 PC's here at home, and there is nothing I can't mod out on the PC that I can't also mod out on the Apple, OS wise. The trick is to know the tricks. Different, yes, but not really 'locked down' compared to Windows. I love windows 7, but I wouldn't say it's better then Snow Leopard. I'd say it's comparable.

Is the hardware expensive? Well, yes and no; you could build a PC to the same specs and be cheaper, but I don't know that you could get an LED monitor to those specs and be cheaper. But it's not really targeted to you or me. Where mac is gaining market share is with people who aren't us.

the reason why mac stuff is more expensive is because it works a large percentage of the time. the only complaints i've heard about about macs that i get are related to price. the other ones are just that the OS is different and that somehow people who use them are sheep or whatever and "don't know computers." ironically i think the same could be said about a lot of windows users a lot of the time.

The main reason for that is the Mac is a fairly closed system. There are only a few set configurations and that's it. Also, whenever Apple releases a new system, you can be guaranteed the quite a few problems will pop up.

True, that last point applies to Windows users too, but it's why I dispute the claim that "it just works" when it comes to Macs.

the range of problems with a new OS release is FAR less, and most of them are typical comparability issues with legacy software.

It does "just work" far more often then windows does. Windows is much, MUCH better then it used to be, but I'd still put it under OS X in how it works.

There is a reason it's growing market share.
