(currently typing from a loaner computer)
So today I leave my computer, come back and there's a blue screen that says there is a problem writing anything to the hard drive. I couldn't restart, and had turn off and back on. When I turned it back on it's asking me for a boot disk, and making this *clunk-ping* noise. My brother, who knows slightly more about computers than myself, made a boot disk, but it still won't let me access anything. He says it's missing all the file allocation tables. He says this could have been caused by a mechanical failure of the drive (which he thinks is what happened, due to the *clink-ping* noise), or could have been caused by a virus. All I know is that my computer is dead!! My brother says this is a very, very, very bad thing... and something he can't fix. He says that probably no local shop can repair a drive, and that I should probably send it out if I even want to dream about getting my files back. Anyone have any advice, or want to suggest where I send it? This is really rather disturbing, since I was stupid enough not to back up five years worth of files. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!! |

If you have another desktop PC, you might be able to mount it as a secondary HD. See if your PC recognizes it and if so, see if you can drag your files from one HD to the other. Then back it up. If you can't then you might still be able to send it to a data recovery company. It might cost you some cash but you might think its worth a couple of hundred bucks to save so much work...
If I see any of those companies I'll post a link.

if the fat is corrupted, then it seems that it would be at least fun to recover it by mounting it as a 2ndary drive from a linux box. that is if it spins up. if it doesnt spin up, then chosenfool is right....don't try anything from here....just take that puppy to the local data recovery place and take out 2nd and 3rd mortgages.
