super soldiers.

http://www.usatoday.com/life/cyber/t...my-uniform.htm

Quote:
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — The Army is hunting for a new military uniform that can make soldiers nearly invisible, grant superhuman strength and provide instant medical care.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is up for the task.

The school said Wednesday it has been awarded a five-year, $50 million dollar grant to develop the armor, which could detect threats and protect against projectiles and biological or chemical weapons.

"We're not there yet, but it's not science fiction," said Ned Thomas, director of the MIT-affiliated Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies.

All this would be achieved by developing particle-sized materials and devices — called "nanotechnology" — nestled into the uniform's fabric.

Supercharged shoes could release energy when soldiers jump, propelling them over a 20-foot wall. Micoreactors could detect bleeding and apply pressure. Light-deflecting material could make the suit blend in with surroundings.

MIT's research centers had been working on nanotechnology ideas long before getting involved with the Army, but not with military applications in mind. But the groundwork has been laid for revolutionary advances, Thomas said.

Reminds me a lot of StarShip Troopers (the book, not the movie).

Great book, and great military ideas.

somehow, it sounds kind of like science fiction to me. i mean, maybe someday, but it seems farfetched to me.

this is some horrible technical writing. as a scientist, i'm disgusted. what the hell does "particle-sized materials and evices" mean? they're just throwing around technical sounding words. this article sucks balls.

lots of the stuff we're lookin at today were considered science fiction just 50 years ago. you'd be suprised how much stuff is based off of those scifi novels.

i think those are going to be coming in 2004.. which are already fully developed, etc. but the ones mentioned in the article posted above is further research for suits that'll come in 10 years or so..

It would sound less like science fiction if they didnt call it "nano-technology." Thats just plain goofy.

they have 3 or 4 different suits the first one will come out in 2004 and other ones come out out further on down the line

they are referring to nano-scale tachnology, i.e. nanometer size particles and devices. it osunds goofy, but it's the best way to describe what kind of research is being done.

my MIT interviewer wants to work on nanotechnology...anyways, ive seen the invisibility cloaking on like 20/20 or 60 minutes a few years ago...it works on soldiers and tanks.
