Thumbs down Guess she was dirty

A Pomona, Calif., woman was arrested and charged with child endangerment after her 2-year-old daughter was found locked inside a running washer at a coin-operated laundry, police said.

Responding to an emergency call at Lucy's Laundromat in Pomona on Saturday night, police and fire units found the girl locked inside the washing machine.

Unable to pry the door open while the cycle was on, police used batons to smash the glass pane. With the help of a laundromat patron who reached through broken glass to hold the child's head above water, police pulled the girl to safety, said a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters resuscitated the girl, who was taken to Children's Hospital of Orange County, where she was listed in serious condition, police said.

"She had not drowned yet, but she was on her way there," said Capt. Dan Ramirez, one of the firefighters at the scene.

He said the rescue was chaotic, with the laundromat filled with shocked patrons plus police and fire personnel desperate to save the girl.

The man who held the girl's head above water cut his arm on the glass. Paramedics stopped the bleeding, Ramirez said.

Surveillance camera footage showed that the woman placed her daughter in one washer, then removed her and placed her in a second front-loading washer, which turned on when she closed the door, Stone said.

"I don't believe what the camera says," the girl's grandmother, Mary Osborne, told KCBS-TV

Friends and neighbors expressed shock and disbelief.

"She wouldn't do anything like that. That's not Erma," neighbor John Herring told the TV station. "She's a nice, loving mother who takes care of her kids."

if thats true, then yeah i agree with yall...

but theres a chance maybe the kid was throwing a fit, and not-so-bright mom thought that the washing machine would be a good place to make her kid stay in one place (kinda like making a kid sit in the corner).... except not-so-smart mom didnt realize the washer turned on when you close the door???....

pretty stupid either way.

Question: Why didnt the cops just unplug the machine and or kill the power to that machine? Usually the fuse box is in the building in a very obvious spot.

Pretty much cutting the power would have stopped the washer, but the kid still might have drowned (since those units are programed to lock once the washing cycle begins...)

true true, we have a front loading washing and you hear it lock like 2 seconds after the water starts flowing...but i was more concerned that the broken glass would have smashed her face.

Wait a minute... maybe I'm missing something here. Now... putting a kid in a washer doesn't sound that bad to me. I mean if she had stuff to do, and she couldn't watch the kid while doing it... sounds kinda logical to put the kid somewhere where it can't get around and hurt itself. Now... a front loading washer as long as it isn't turned on is a large area, with no sharp edges... Ok... it was pretty stupid of her to not know that it would turn on... but would a coin operated washer (I'm assuming thats that they have at laundromats) turn on if you didn't turn them on (the washer did turn on automatically, right or did she turn it on). Doesn't really sound like a malicious thing... Am I missing something here?

Most of the laundromats I've been to, you have to put coins in and close the door to start the cycle. If it started after you just closed the door all the washers would turn on if you accidentally shut the door...then wait for the cycle to finish to even use the washer.

It seems to me that there is no way this woman could have NOT known that the washer would turn on since there had to be money put into this machine to start it and most people don't put money in when they finish a load. I just think that the worlk is getting pretty bad when people start killing off their own children.

I dunno...do they have "emergency drain valves" on those types of washers? I know that the regular ones don't...
i don't think so, one time my dad and i had a bitch of a time trying to get it to open after we manually stopped it...it had to cycle out or something (i dunno...the women weren't home)...

Yes, you are missing something. This is the most ridiculous post I have seen on this site or any other site. Putting a kid in a washer doesn't sound that bad to you? What? Are you stupid? So parents should just buy a little cage for their children? That way when you have $hit to do and you don't have time for your kids you can throw them in the cage? That is brilliant. Yep, there are NO sharp edges in that washer just a FEW gallons of water and no way to get out. She had to turn it on, those things won't turn on and won't accept money until the door is closed.

I agree with this, but they didn't say if they saw her put money in the video (if she did, you figure the video would have it). Now, whether they just didn't mention it or whether she didn't do it, I have no idea. I haven't seen the video, and have no idea how those machines work. Just throwing out the idea to try to get a better understanding of the situation.

Ok... I bow to your wisdom. Yes, it's much better for her to put the kid on the washer or in the basket where she could fall off. Better yet, put her on the ground where she could wander off and get lost or stepped on. As for the cage analogy, that is stupid. If you were at home, you have the option of a crib (actually... those are kinda like cages with the guardrails and all), but if you're at a laundromat, you make do with what you have.
As far as how a washing machine at a laundromat works, to be honest, I've never used one, so I have no idea how they work. That's why I asked. Now... if she had to turn it on, then yes, what she did was criminal. It would've been much better to just explain that without being a prick about it... but then I guess some people just can't deny their true selves.

Let's see, wander off, get stepped on or DROWN????? Which is worse? Hmmmm....let me think. Yep, let's make do with what we have, so I suppose if we are at the zoo we should put our kid(s) in the snake pit while we go to the restroom. I mean, we do have to make do with what we have instead of actually having an ounce of common sense about what we do.
