song of the year for 2003

hands down, outkast, "hey ya." seriously. they've played the dogpoop out of it, and it never got old. i still love it. it defies classification. 800 different styles blended into a seamless song that is endlessly entertaining.

yep. don't bother disagreeing. you'd just be wrong. song of the year, i tell you.

I don't dig that song at all. I don't really like rap, but I think Big Boi's album was better. To each his own.

Get used to the song. I'm sure in about six months or so it will be in commercials selling just about everything under the sun.

I think "Hey yah" is a really cool song. I can't think of anything better off the top of my head.

Not sure if you were joking or not, but Big Boi is part of Outkast. He was referring to the double album that was released, with each member being the main guy behind their respective albums. "Hey Ya" was on Andre's album (the other guy in Outkast).

Kidz bop is a cd released every few months (like the Now series) with kids singing popular songs. The songs are edited, of course, and are pretty popular with the pre-teens.

Song of the year:

Though I think that Andre 3000 and Big Boi released some great music (which was a nice change from the new-age rap), and despite my hatred for 50 Cent, I would have to say song of the year goes to:

50 Cent - In Da Club

all i know is what kidz bop tells me...

boy, i can tell df junior doesn't watch nick jr, otherwise df would be like me... i've seen kidz bop commercials every thirt minutes for the last three years... it starts to DO stuff to you, man!

yeah, it's awful stuff. they take either perfectly good songs or really awful songs (j lo, britney, blech) and record 8 year olds warbling them. drives me nuts. obviously. i'm quite mad, you know.

and all i know is i saw some show or another on E! that attributed the song hey ya to some group called outkast...

did i mention i know nothing about music?

I think Story of the Year - Until the Day I Die was the best song of the year. I saw them in concert back at the end of May at the House of Blues, they put on an incredibly energetic and well played show. This song is especially powerful for those that aren't too fond of their ex SO's.

i wouldn't classify it as rap, sounds a bit more on the reggae side to me.

kim knows... she KNOWS!!!! it's evil...

actually, the most impressive part was that kidz bop actually DIDN'T ruin the song, like they usually do.

kim, just turn on the radio to any pop, rap, soul or mix station... basically any station cept country or oldies and you'll hear it within an hour

after chosen's endorsement, i may have to buy the album... that would be the SECOND new album i've bought in a week. i've bought about two a year for the last 5 years.

the other one i just bought is wierd and really cool... it's called "songs for dustmites." it's by ... uh... the flaming lips. yeah. that's right

"Awkward Age" by Joe Jackson from the Volume 4 CD. Also great from that CD is "Love At First Light."

My 9 year old *loves* Kidz Bop. I figured it's less evil than having her listen to Missy Elliot or (the now artistically bankrupt and Avril wannabe) Liz Phair.

And if you have a 70s- and 80s-bent, you should seriously consider picking up Mandy Moore's Coverage CD. She actually does a respectable job on songs by XTC, The Waterboys, Joan Armatrading, Joe Jackson, and others. The "anti-Britney" succeeds, and my kids really like it.

And while the only place I listen to current music is at my health club, I will toss another vote in for "Hey Ya." Although I kinda like that "Stacy's Mom" song from Fountains of Wayne, too.

Cute WL . I looked it up out of curiosity, and its a collaboration between Steve Burns (Steve from Blues Clues), and one of the members of the Flaming Lips. So how is it? What's the music like?

If you're interested in the Lips but have none, I highly recommend The Soft Bulletin.

i have no other stuff by the lips, but i think prm does... when it comes to music, he's underground hiding from the man, and flaming lips is about as mainstream as he gets. i think he has the soft bulletin around here somewhere... damn i need to clean the basement.

as for dust mites... the music is really pretty innovative... warbly, wierd, not quite upbeat but definitely not angst-ridden whiney crap... i would compare it to sigur ros, only it's more in-your-face, while sigur ros is more ambient, and more techno. the lyrics have a definite james joyce bent to them.

and the guy can actually sing, too.

Steve is cool And yeah, it's great hearing him singing about anything besides finding clues!

"Hey Ya" is a great song. It's one of those songs that 3-5 years from now, you will hear it in the club and you will get back into today's groove.

And as for kid's bop, we have 3 of the 4 that are out... it isn't my 9 yr old that likes them. She likes the teenie bop stuff and country. My 6yr old loves those things along with Radio Disney volumes too.

Now dems fightin' words! Yeah her latest offering might not be as good as what she previously did but to compare her to Avril is just a low blow. Downright harsh.

I totally agree with you. Mandy's Coverage album was actually pretty darn impressive. I thought it would be another terrible remake of some great songs, but she did a better than average job on them.

Seriously. Liz's songwriting is mature, intelligent, and gripping. She plays her own guitar as well, and not too badly. Avril is cheesy-puff teeny-porn-pop manufactured by the same industry wonks that brought you Britney and the Backstreet Boys. To even mention them in the same sentence is an insult to good taste.

flaming lips rule! one of the most fun concerts ever -- just a complete trip.....especially when wayne dumped blood on himself and sang happy birthday.

the one bummer was the when i saw them in toronto at SARS-stock and all the crazy canucks had no appreciation for what was going on and were practically booing them

My only points about the Liz Phair-Avril Lavigne connection is that: (a) some of the songs on Phair's last album are written or co-written by The Matrix, the team who writes Lavigne's songs-- and many of the others were written by Michael Penn (a decent artist in his own right), not Liz; and (b) the songs I've heard from her latest album sounds like an Avril Lavigne record, with the exception of "HWC" which sounds like an attempt at proving she can still swagger.

And come on-- "Why Can't I" sounds almost exactly like "I'm With You."

The problem is that I remember the late 80s-early 90s Liz Phair who played the little clubs here in Chicago and wrote all her own songs. She had some guts then. Now she's commercial.
