2 cats 1 too many?

We went to the vet the other day for our cat "Pumpkin" who always gets some poo stuck in her...area. Causing bladder infections. We shave that area to keep this from happening, but it still does. She is too heavy and we have her on reduced diet food and try to cut her down, but she doesnt lose (but instead gains) weight. The vet suggested another cat to get it exercising.

I have had dogs my whole life, and am actually allergic (mildly) to cats. I give pumpkin a bath every week to stop my reactions. She is a great cat, for an originally wild cat (We found her almost 3 years ago on holloween if anybody remembers the thread). She doesn't claw and doesn't really go after furniture.

Now stephanie is stuck on the idea of another cat. She wants another tabby and she wants to name it "Ginger". I told my boss (who owns 3 cats) about the name and he told me if we get a female and name it Ginger he is going to fire me for being a whimp.

Anybody have experience having 2 cats 3 years apart? Does it help with losing weight? Anybody have good names other than "Ginger" *shudder*.

What I really want is a dog, a dobberman. But her family is so ignorant about dob's that they think it will kill pumpkin and try to kill us in our sleep (fools).

Three years is not a huge age difference so they may be okay. Sometimes I have seen older cats pretty pissed when a younger cat comes into the house and tries to play with them. My mother's cats pretty much ignore each other so it would not help with the exercise. A dog would get the cat moving though. My roommate has a gorgeous male doberman. Never really liked them before, but this guy converted me. You should tell your SO that you can't name the cat until you see it.
P.S. Don't become that weird guy walking a cat on a leash though.

My parents 12 year old Dob is awesome. She has only bitten 4 people her entire life. 1 kid was walking down our driveway 2 years ago and didn't stop when a 75lb dog started barking at him. She got ahold of his shoe and thats it.

First time was when a jogger came into our property after he wanted to "make her leave him alone" and kicked her. She bit him in the leg, another neighbor saw him kick the dog and laughed his ass off after our dog went through the elec invis fence and bit him...moron.

2nd time was a UPS driver

3rd time was my fiance showed up our 3rd month of dating without telling anybody, the dob didn't like that and ripped her pants leg. Carrie was never trained to attack, only to obey on the first command (which she still does).

Otherwise, just imagine a 75lb "fearsome" dog afraid to walk in snow and scared to death of rabbits (yes, scared of rabits). Beautiful dog, just a whimp when it comes to rabbits.

That's what I like... a dog that knows what the owner wants.

We have 3 cats and really, one is a huge cat and it doesn't help having 2 others there to "exercise" him. Have you tried setting out a certain amount of food, once or twice a day (whatever the vet recommends) instead of just leaving it out all the time? Try a low-fat diet as well, such as Science Diet or some other healthier food.

We don't leave food out and we already use the science diet stuff.

Hrmm guess i didn't comment after my wonderful picture.

anywho, My brother's ex had a cat that was fat. She got another cat, and the first cat started eating all the new cat's food, which made it fatter, obviously. She eventually had to put the new cats food up high, where the fat cat couldn't jump.

so in short..don't be an enabler...

We got a new tabby cat and named him Tobi. My wife wanted to go back on the decision a few weeks later and name him Ernie. I liked the idea, but I didn't want to confuse the poor guy, we had already been using his name in every other word to get him used to it.

my parents have a 4 year old cat, who is very well behaved, like yours.

My sister couldn't take care of her 1 year old cat in her apartment in NYC, so she gave it to my parents.

The two cats do not get along at all. They fight and hiss, even whacking eachother quite frequently. They really avoid eachother.

My parents have a large house, so the cats can usually have their own corner. My parent's big, old cat has been quite unhappy since the little one moved in. The cats are outdoors for much of the day, so they probably get a lot of their frustrations out while playing (independently). We're not looking forward to winter time.

Well, before we got the little one, we knew that she wasn't too well behaved. She was pretty neglected in my sister's apartment, and would bite and scratch frequently. otherwise, she was a very sweet kitten. Bipolar disorder for cats?

So, i'd say it depends, but chances are that your fattie won't like having a kitten in the house. Let us know what happens.

Honestly, a second cat will not ensure an exercised first cat. There is a scientific study going on in my house right now... two cats, the second got fat right along with the first.

Our dog gives them more exercise chasing them around the house... or even a kid

But, if you whimp out and get a 2nd cat, choose a name from a mech or other robot/fps game. We did that with Dashee (couldn't spell it if I wanted to, never played the game, just watched Donnie). He was a siamese mix and apparently the name meant 'sudden death' or something. I dunno. But if you remember, he was the cat that broke it's leg right after we got him and would chew through Donnie's computer wires. We gave him to a friend... he is doing much better pouncing on his ankles instead of ours

LOL, Daishi means "Great Death", good mech named after it in Battletech/Mechwarrior games. I'd love that, but my Fiance...ooof, that'd be tough getting past her.

I told her thats a skanky stripper name. I thought pumpkin was ok, considering we found her on holloween, but Ginger is just too much.

and you wonder why your fiance is worried about a doberman being too violent? if something chewed on my leg i'd be a little concerned too!

what about getting another kind of puppy? one with a better reputation for being people-friendly? or, pull up some research and show your wife that dobermans don't have to be fierce dogs. i know boxers can be rather vicious, but if they're trained right, they're really quite sweet.

I guess my first post Should have to do with that cat, I was the one responsible for nameing that cat and giving it its "must kill everything nature" his happly living with a friend and is still as crazy as ever. We were going to name it "Mad Cat" but that didnt last long, "Ryoken" was a close second.
