Post Family Booted From Buffet For Wasting Too Much Food

Family Booted From Buffet For Wasting Too Much Food
Manager Says Family Wasted Food Several Times

POSTED: 9:19 am CDT May 5, 2006

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Wendy Dershem may think twice before leaving that egg roll on her plate at her next Chinese buffet.

The Des Moines woman, her boyfriend and her two children were kicked out of a restaurant last week after management at Dragon House accused her of leaving too much food on her plate.

Dershem said she paid for her buffet on Saturday but was abruptly told to leave after eating one plate of food.

Employees said they had been watching her family on previous trips to the restaurant and were fed up with her habits. They said she would pile her plate with food, take one bite and throw it away.

"They just take one bite and throw it away," said cashier Lin Huyen. "They take four egg rolls and crab ragoon, take one bite of egg roll and throw the whole plate. That is wasting food."

Dershem said she was shocked by the scolding and complained to management when she paid her check.

Dragon House manager Kent Cao said his restaurant does not offer an all-you-can waste buffet. He said Dershem's family took food, didn't finish it and then piled on the same food again, he said. He says he won't allow her back in the restaurant unless she changes her ways. [/email]

back in hs, i used to work in a buffet restaurant. man, seeing ppl waste food like that really made me think twice. now, whenever i visit a buffet (even in LV), i take like 4 or 5 items on my plate, finish it, then go back for more.

I can't say that I blame the restaurant... however all they can do at this point is just refuse them future service (which they are doing...)

Pretty much it is a shame that folks would do something like that at a buffet... especially when they do it with the "popular stuff" that everyone likes. I remember one time going to a buffet where this one guy would basically take almost the whole tray of this one item and would just sit there and watch everyone else look at him with his plate filled high and the empty pan on the buffett line.

So inconsiderate... I mean c'mon.. .it's a buffet but that doesn't give you the right to spoil it for everyone else.

The nice thing about a buffett is that you can try something new and if you don't like there is no harm done. But the way this was described, that family was clearly out of line.

This is a tough one.

First of all, I doubt the restaurant's story. She would "...pile up her plate, take one bite, and then throw the rest away"? That doesn't sound right. Maybe if the food was bad...but then she goes back and gets more? Something sounds fishy...

Bottom line: the restaurant didn't like her cutting into their bottom line. They should have asked her (politely) to monitor her habits. It's a buffet, after all; if you don't like food being thrown away, kill the buffet and only offer entrees.

hmmm. i have to wonder how accurate the owners' account is. my guess would be that they were just being too uptight; maybe the family just liked to eat the middle of the rangoon, for example, and threw out the cripsy corners with no filling in em, for example. left the hard-to-get meat on the chicken bones or in the crab legs. i have a hard time believing that they took one bite of an eggroll, threw everything away, then went back for more of the same... but who knows? people are crazy...

I can agree with you on this... However I guess we really can't tell how the folks were eating based on the one sided POV as given.

But then again... if you get 6 to 10 eggrolls from the buffet and just bite the ends off of each of them and tossed the rest away... then that would be considered abusive wouldn't it?

i figure that this family really had to have bad habits for the owners to scrutinize them and point them out.

i HIGHLY doubt that this buffet was a good place.
ive been to many buffets in my lifetime, and never was it a chinese food buffet.
sounds like cheap chinese management.

I have a favorite Chinese Buffet close to home and they have very good food. I have seen people (like these) who come in and let their kids run wild ,taking whatever they want. And of course not making them eat it. We always had a fast rule when my kids were young, whether at home or restaurant "you take it ,you eat it". It really cut down on the food my kids put on their plates. Especially in a buffet. Wasting food is my absolute biggest pet peeve. So I don't have a problem believing this really happened
the way the restaurant manager says. Except for the 1 bite theory. She probably ate 1/2 and tossed half which is still a huge waste of food.

I am glad the restaurant did this. I have gone into all you can eat buffets and I love the fact that you can try new things and if you don't like them then you can get something else. From what the restaurant was saying this family would get a certain dish, not eat the stuff, throw it away, and then go get the same dish. What a waste.
