Now that Star 100 is off the air, and replaced with "Jack Radio" I heard a few people talk about channel surfing.

So this forum is to talk about the different choices available and what each offers.

First, there seem to be three main radio regions in San Diego:
* Chula Vista (and vicinty, aka south bay)
* Mission Valley (like downtown up to Del Mar)
* Carlsbad (the northern communities)

(I guess Poway and El Cajon fit into the above somewhere, depending on broadcast signals, and placement of towers.)

Second, San Diego has lots of stations that play a variety of things and sometimes the airawves change at different times of the day.

Third, many of the stations are "Spanish" stations, meaning that they speak mainly Spanish and play predominantly "Mexican" music. This is in no way a knock against that, but it is not traditional American radio music so it will not be my focus.

So this thread is about identifying what channels play what music, what time of the day it's played, and what region you can heard it. Further, I'd love to get people's review of the music format, DJs, commerical ad volume, etc.

I picked up the following stations on my car radio by using the scan button (and ignoring anything with too much static. I also tried to classify the station according to the 15 seconds I listened (no classification if there was a commercial)

Note that I may update this list with call-letters, etc as we go.

103.7 is KPLN I believe. They're The Planet and they have Howard Stern on in the mornings.

92.5 is a great station. Not only playing disco but old skool R&B.

Sure thing...I just require a bowl of chips and dip with a Pepsi (1 part rum)

KGB...is classic rock...btw..you didn't hear any(music) if it was morning before 10ish(DSC blab radio)..Also from7-11ish (Ithink)Is a repeat of the morning blab...otherwise great music the rest of the day!!All heard in EC!

I really gave up on radio.. i got tired of hearing the same songs all the time. I mean I got more music in my 10 disc changer than most stations play weekly..

I worked with a guy who had that...and loved it except when it sucked--like every time he went into the parking garage and got a dead signal.

I'll stick with free radio and tolerate the commercials and repeats since I just don't spend my whole day listening to the radio--although I might if they offered it for free listening on the web. I looked at Star's offer and they wanted $5 a month...not much, but I simply didn't care enough to pay them to listen to their cr*p.

I kept searching for music in the mornings and it's slim pickin's! So I started listening to NPR and other stuff that at least challenges my mind with various topics (although lots of the topics don't interest me, so I'm back at square one.)

Sirius allows you to login to your account for free so you can listen from your computer. I think that XM charges you a small extra fee for that service. I listen to my Sirius account pretty much all day after I'm done listening to Howard Stern on the radio in the mornings. Sirius also has a free trial period from their website where you can listen online for a few days for no charge.

All of their music channels are available over the Internet but not all of their talk radio is available online, just a few channels.

Another option I found is to "create" your own radio station with Yahoo Launchcast. Just sign in, and listen to almost commercial free radio. You listen online, so it's convenient at work. You can skip up to 5 songs if you don't like them. The more you listen and rate the songs/artists, the more your station will fit into your taste. You can pick a general genre of music and narrow it down from there...or broaden it.

You get a few commercials, but it is only 1 in between 5 or so songs in a row. And it's FREE! I listen to the radio at work, too, but when I don't want to listen to the same old songs, I go to Launchcast.

Thanks, LoveSD...trying it now, and so far so good.

Personally, I wanted to listen to Star on my computer, but didn't want to pay for it. I didn't even mind hearing the live broadcast including commercials...just didn't want to do it through a separate radio. Launchcast looks like it fits the bill for me...

You're welcome, Dogopoly. If you run out of skips, what I usually do is sign out and sign back in. =) Hehe. Then I get another skip. They allow you about 5 an hour, I think. If you want truly commercial free with this, you can pay a small monthly fee of $3 a month (but it is an annual subscription). I don't need to subscribe. The free songs are good enough for me.

I like the fact that you can pick any genre you want...80s, rock, classic, jazz, etc. But the more you rate, the better. The songs are random songs, so you never know what songs will come up next. I like that. Better than JACK FM, though. Ugh. I didn't even really like Star in the first place....oh well.
