Lucky Man
Oh, ok, so on Friday is Sammy's dance recital. we get there and I have to wait, because they aren't letting anyone into the auditorium. Which sucks, there is this huge crowd. I get pissy, so I wander off to the side of the auditorium to sit down and veg till they let people in. I know I'm not going to get a good seat. Off to the side, I see there is this table blocking one of the doors to the auditorium. Clearly, this is to prevent people from sneaking in through a door they cannot lock. I'm thinking, you know, they are blocking a fire exit, I'll move the table. I won't go in, but I'll sit there until they officially let people in, and grab a seat that way. I'm honest, but predatory. Well, just as I move the table, this guy will all this camera equipment shows up trying to get in. He is with channel 12 to video the show. So I open the door and help him carry his stuff inside. He needs to get to the light booth, and no one is helping him, so I grab the sound guy who grabs the dance lady. While he is doing that, the channel 12 guy goes to get more stuff, and I find myself just standing in the auditorium guarding some guys stuff. Meanwhile, a lady comes in that side door and immediately gets pounced on by the stage manager that the house isn't open, get out. She complains about me, but the stage manager points out I'm with channel 12. I say nothing. So the guy comes back, we get the key to the elevator, and I help him bring his stuff to the light booth, which is way at the top with a PERFECT view of the stage. Just as we get in, naturally they open up the auditorium. I see I have no shot of getting a seat. The channel 12 guy lets me stay. I sit in the sound booth, filming with my Sony, with no crowds, no fat grandmas in front of me, no wild kids running back and forth in front of my camera (which I could totally see it was damn madhouse down there). It was the first time I actually sort of enjoyed going to one of those things. I gotta figure out how to scam this again next year.
