Grow Old With You

13 years, we've been married. I was thinking on it this weekend, and I'm having a hard time recalling not being married. I know there was a time. I know there was the awkwardness and stupidity of youth. I know there were fights and silliness and coasting down the hill in your beat to hell Saab, hoping we could make the gas last long enough to get to the station. I know there was a time when a goofy girl with a happy smile shared a Slurpee with me after school. I know there were incessant phone calls that drove me nuts. I know were trips up north, moments of sadness and times where it was a wonder we ever wised up and just got married.

And then poof, 13 years go by.

I wonder how time does that? How it seems so slow and plentiful, then suddenly you find yourself looking back, stunned at all that has gone by. I think that only happens when things are right, though. I think that when things are wrong, time is slow, and never seems to end, and you never ever want to look back upon it.

But when it's right, and when things just fit together, time zooms. Time becomes a great book you cannot put down, and when you finish you want to pick it up again and start all over at the beginning, reviewing every moment, every word spoken.

That's what being married to you is like. It's a book I cannot stop reading, cannot stop reviewing. I want to jump around the pages, looking at my favorite bits, like sitting on the shore of Lake Superior, checking out the stars as the fire dies down. I want to revisit the pages where we meet our daughters for the first time, or put up our first Christmas tree in our first apartment together. I want to revisit that silly wedding that seems to have set the tone for the whole of our marriage.

And I want to read on, to that last page. I want to see you gray and wrinkled. I want to be a slumbering old man, shuffling along with you at the mall while the grandkids talk over our heads. I want to fall asleep on the couch while you watch cooking shows. I want to hear you make snide comments about the bad voice over on a video game while I'm just trying to play. I want to continue to almost smack my head on open kitchen cabinets, and to trip over shoes that seem to wander the house on their own. I want you to tell me important things when I'm clearly too tired to track anything. I want to rant at you about something I just read on line while you're cooking and clearly ignoring me.

That's all good stuff, to me.

Happy Anniversary, baby.

And for the rest of you, you go have a day.
