Ode the Car Of Youth

It seems a lot of people around me are getting new cars. Or newer cars. Mostly because in Minnesota, a hell of a lot of people drive SUV’s and trucks, because let’s face it, we have a lot of reason to want AWD in our vehicles. If not the snow, it’s the 10,000 lakes and lack of paved roads at favorite fishing spots or the raw tonnage of boats that exist here. But with gas costing what it does, a lot of those boat haulers and blizzard beaters are getting For Sale signs slapped on 'em, toot sweet.

But my good friend has to get a new car because sadly, his 10 year old Mazda gave its life to save him.

It’s always sad when an old friend goes away. This car had something like 2 trillion miles on it, but was at trooper. It’s only slightly older than his child. I remember when he first test drove it, how proud he was.

And now, it’s gone.

We all love the new cars. But let’s take a moment to remember the old standby, the one that saw us through good trips and bad, that saw us through someone leaving a frozen chicken in the trunk for 3 days in the summer, the one we got married in or the one we first felt like an adult in, our first grown up car.

I speak of cars like my old 74 super beetle, taken before it’s time. My baby blue Ford Fiesta, rear ended by a station wagon. My Trooper, a beast of a truck with a tiny engine and a zero to 60 time measured in days. The cars of years past.

Pour out a 40 for our homies gone on to the great gas station in the sky.
