GotApex-Throwback

Apparently we can’t be on a shared server despite the fact that we had a clean WP installation, two text posts, and zero images.  The host blamed our plugins (we had 2-3 standard ones running) and then blamed Google and Bing for crawling the site two much.

It just wasn’t working, so we just signed up for a VPS  and it’ll hopefully resolve all those previous issues.

Things to do:

1)  Install nifty looking theme
2)  Migrating usernames (you will likely be prompted to recreate passwords)
3)  Implement coupons
4)  Post deals
5)  Think about migrating forums

Migrating the old forums is going to be a challenge.  We are coming from a highly customized vBulletin platform to a lightweight BBPress platform.  Something is bound to break along the way.  We’re also not sure if BBPress can handle the sheer amount of forum posts we’ve accumulated along the way.

*cross fingers*

Just wondering what prompted you to make the change? I’m just trying to learn.

I did not see, nor read, the Part 1 and Part 2, only Part 3. Forgive me if it was written prior. It looks like parts 1 & 2 are not available to read.

      Hi Corey,

Sorry about that. Parts I & II were on the previous “hosted” server plan. Since there were only two posts, we didn’t migrate anything over to the new server.

We switched from vBulletin to WordPress for several reasons:

      1) Change in priorities – The old site format takes up a lot of time to keep updated and we wanted to spend more time with family.
      2) Huge overhead – Since our original vBulletin was heavily customized and had a ginormous database attached, the server requirements were huge.
      3) New platform – We have decided to go with a blog format, which WordPress is the platform of choice.
      4) More interesting – We can write about what we think are a few really good deals rather than posting a bunch of one-liners. We believe this will be much more useful to our readers. Let’s face it, if you want a ton of quasi-deals, there are plenty of other sites that do it better.

Happy to see you are continuing on in some form. I have used deals and even better has been the help and advice I have gotten to questions on the old site. I hope the new site frees up time for your families. I have been guilty of too much work and forgetting what is really important.
Peace, and look forward to the new site.
    Bob

Don’t like the change. Less information, harder to use, and way too much whitespace. It suffers from slashdot beta syndrome.

Thanks for the feedback, we appreciate it. We’re still working on tweaking (read: fixing) the look & feel.

A funny thing happened on the way to the forum — it disappeared! I take a couple of days off from the site to draft a complaint and when i come back its gone…..

I know that Gabe mentioned that you were all going to have a think session, but I guess I never expected the forums to completely disappear.

With that said, as a father I know that our kids grow up in a bat of an eye and to say time is at a premium would be an understatement, I fully understand the desire to minimize the amount of time that is spent on each item as for every minute saved can be spent elsewhere. I just hope that you find a way to reincorporate the forums into the new version.

Now to look for tickets to SD.

Working on importing forum data as we speak.

I realize that GotApex does not owe us anything, but forum data would be awesome. I often foundd myself going back in them to “research” recent history.

    I blame DF.

Indeed, DF must have scared him right out of the country.

If anyone knows of good candidates, lemme know. :D

What do you need done specifically?

  19. Apex August 15, 2014 at 4:20 pm - Reply

First thing that comes to mind is transferring the VBB forums and members to a WordPress forum like bbPress, and integrating it.

Not sure I’d have time to take on another project right now. But that doesn’t sound like it would be that difficult.
