Virus - or am I retarded
So I got the old PC out of the closet today... been more than a year since I went Mac only.
Turned it on, ran virus updates, ran Windows updates, got SP2 on it, FireFox 1.5 yadda yadda. So all seems well, then I reboot! Now whenever I open anything, Firefox, Gaim, IE, Adaware, iTunes, Word.... you get the idea- it says, sorry the application had an error and needs to close, putting me back at my desktop. If I ignore the error I can continue on, but after like 3 hours I have loads of error windows in the lower corner because if I hit ok, it does indeed close any and every program. It appears only Norton is uneffected. I suppose I could do a roll back, but I ran 3 software giants' virus checks, and get nothing, I ran stinger, sasser killer, and bugaboo zapper... What demon have I unleashed upon my machine? I will eventually format it, if it doesn't go in the dumpster first, but sheesh, whats the big idea! Anyone have something like this?

Are you running any kind of software firewall? I was getting that error message on certain pages (with streaming media) in either Firefox or IE. From the Applications log in Event Viewer, it seemed that my firewall was involved. I went to the vendor site (I'm using Panda right now) and saw an update - once I installed it the error went away.

You can run some free online virus checks. Trend Micro has one and so does F-Secure.

No firewall other than windows firewall. I will run fsecure sometime I guess.
What really statled me happened later, when I went to system restore, before I could load a date, I was sitting there, and a loud snap and burning smell ensued. The 3 year old CRT burnt out, right then and there. I am fairly certain this can not be caused by a virus, but if you know otherwise let me know. Next step is to look at the PSU... not sure why that would cause the kernel to kill just apps, but maybe a wavering voltage leaves XP unstable. Otherwise, I will just accept I have an unknown virus, and move on with my life. |

That's not a virus that's SP2. Sometimes it nukes computers

Not seriously... He just has a general hate for windows and xbox as seen in other threads. He doesn't have much evidence behind it, just likes to throw down his opinion as fact. Viruses suck... Why can't they all just catch a cold and die.

i don't think it's a virus, I think it might be a corruption on the harddrive. Especially if you were having a power issue, since funky voltage can create bad sectors on a drive.

Norton can hose you when going to sp2. Try disabling/uninstalling the norton firewall and see if that changes things. I worked on a friend's machine with this scenario and what would happen is the first page on the net he went to would pop right up, but subsequent pages never would load. I don't know if you have similar problems when browsing. Bottom line; the old norton suite does not play well with sp2.

I am a desktop engineer at my place of employment, and right now we are rebuilding SP1 devices to SP2 by laying down a whole new image because when we originally tried deploying SP2, 50% of the machines became unusable due to blue screens after reboot. You could boot safe mode and uninstall SP2, but machines remained screwed up. With some assistance from Microsoft, we've gotten that number down and have started deploying SP2 to some devices, but we still manage to hose machines here and there.

With my new job (well, new last August) I don't have nearly as much time to speak technical advice here.

I either do a fresh install with a slipstreamed CD or, if I have to install SP2 on an existing installation, I install it from Safe Mode. Takes less time plus I have noticed fewer install glitches that way. Most of the borked SP2 installs I have seen have been because of previously existing undetected malware. Granted, my environment probably differs greatly from yours. I am just adding to the discussion...

I don't think I've ever seen an SP2 upgrade hose a computer. At least not in my office, and we've probably done about 100 or so.
