I just built my first system (CUSL2 733 with a standard voodoo3 3000 AGP) and the very first thing I installed after Win98 SE was Quake III. (I wanted to see my fps at it's peak)

Now that I've installed some more software, quake keeps "trippin over itself"-it just gets unbearable choppy for about 3-4 seconds at a time. (during a single player game) This is highly annoying when you hear your own blood
splatter before you see it coming...

So far, all I have installed is Winamp, Norton Antivirus, and I got a windows update patch from the microshaft, er, microsoft website.

Why is my system bogging down?

(I even installed Rambooster, but it helped very little)

Thanks,

Wilks

First try turning down the video settings for quake 3. Also use the wickedgl driver for the Voodoo 3. How much ram do you have? You should have 128 megs to stop hard drive thrashing.

Well, I'll give the driver a shot, but I do have 128 MB of PC133 RAM. Also, my virtual mem has no limit.

I've even tried to close all TSR's through Ctrl + Alt + Delete.

My video settings are down in quake. Plus, all the other characters, though labled properly, look like my character (Sarge) in Single Player mode.

Well,
I installed the driver, with limited success. Loading time went ultra fast, but it was still dragging.

I don't get it. 7200 ATA100 HDD, PIII 733, and 16 MB of Video memory.

Does anyone have a clue why Quake is eating up resources like mad??

You might want to double-check and make sure you aren't having any hardware conflicts. I've had conflicts before that still allowed both devices to function, although not properly.

When you adjusted the settings, did it include the resolution or just effects?

One other thing to consider is that either the OS or Q3 didn't install cleanly and you didn't experience the effects until after installing other software that may have caused/added to performance loss. It may be a pain to reinstall, but anything for the games right? =)

Ok, I've gotten rid of most of the choppyness. Here's what I did:

I went to the http://www.cusl2.com webpage, where I ran to updates on my BIOS. I got rid of that stupid PC probe software that was buggy as sin. I reinstalled quake, three times. I also realized that my PCI bus was not being recognized properly, so I reinstalled my CUSL2 hardware drivers.

I still have a little choppiness, but it's for the most part gone. If anyone else would like to speculate as to what's causing the last of this, please respond. There is nothing more annoying that having to wait for a computer to catch up....

Thanks,

Wilks
