I have an ATI All-in-wonder pro, its based on the Rage PRO chipset. I spent the past few days updating the drivers for my video card, and have noticed that the processor is pegged at 50% with no apps showing in the task manager.

Ok, I know it is old, but I like the VIVO and TV stuff, and I dont play too many games. ATI released new drivers just last week, and new multimedia center. The new drivers have openGL support. I want my processor back, but dont want to give up the features of my new drivers!

Anyone having similar experiences? I am going to try to figure out what it is tonight. Last night I took out ALL the services, jsut to make sure. this is a problem because my DVD playback is horrible, and this performance is not what I was looking for when I went to WIN2k.

Thumbs up I have an AIW Pro running in win2k too

I installed the drivers and no significant change in performance from the native Win2k drivers (with the exception of added feature and new multimedia stuff) I haven't had any OS problems at all with my AIW-ever.

How does your CPU/MB config look?

I tried uninstalling the ati drivers, and yes, it didnt effect my 50% utilization. Again, my performance tab of task manager never really dips below 50%, even after shutting down ALL services(that I can), and giving the computer ample time to settle down from activity.

Thanks so much for any insight someone might have; I am thinking ATI isnt my problem here.

My system:
440bx mb
256 mb
400mhz p2
ati aiw pro, 8mb agp 2x
SB AWE 64

I just installed win2k from scratch a week ago, so Ill list all that I have installed(not too much):
service pack 1, all critical updates from winupdate
diablo2
nero cd burning software
smtp, ftp, telnet, iis services(have stopped them)
winzip
perl
msoffice
winamp
microsoft visual studio

Talking DUDE!

Our computers are almost identical!

Mine:
P2-400 (o/ced to 470)
128M
P2B-F (440bx)
ati aiw pro, 8mb agp 2x
Aureal A3D 2.0

The only things of significance that you have installed that I don't is:

nero cd burning software (prolly not your problem)
perl (don't know what this is)
microsoft visual studio (this may be your problem)

I suggest getting Ontrack's Fix-it Utilities (ver 2000 or 3.0) and running a registry fixer.

Wow, we do have the same sys. I am having some second thoughts about the accuracy of the task manager performance mon. Do you have trouble with DVD playback? That is really the only place I see the performance struggle.

dev studio is a programming environ, and I dont think it puts anything in.

I am more likely to reinstall win 2k and keep a closer eye on the performance after I get the geforce mx card I have had my eye on, http://www.ocie.com.

I dual boot

I use Win2k for most things, but I dual boot (2nd HD-using Bootstar) to Win98 for games and DVD playback. The reason is software-I like WinDVD, and the version I have doesn't like NT (year and a half old). So, I haven't used my DVD player in Win2k.

One other thing...I too am looking at the Innovision GeForce MX cards at ocie.com, but can't find one with a good feature-set at a good price. I need Video Out (at the very least).

Ill let you know if I see a card somewhere with video out in this price range. I just isntalled powerstrip, which lets you overclock the ati card. I am also thinking over overclocking my 400mhz to get a little more life out of everything. If you would like I can get you the ati dvd player.

It is when you stole the ATI All-in-wonder pro like Bires did. Now why he took that videocard and not the gefarce 2 sitting next to it we'll never know.

Ok, whatever it was that inspired me to start this thread about my processor pegging at 50% utilization, has stopped. I can only guess that the aliens inside my computer have finished with their calculations!
