Eek be ready - Vista system may need more memory per DELLS CEO

Dell only just figured this out? CA-CHING!

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/busine...ftvista27.html
Quote:
Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Vista computer operating system may need double the amount of main memory recommended by the world's biggest software maker, Dell Inc. Chief Executive Kevin Rollins said.

"I think they tell you maybe 1 gig of memory is OK," Rollins said Thursday at a speech at Shanghai's Jiaotong University, referring to Microsoft's recommendations. "No. Two gigs of memory would be great."

Microsoft's latest version of Windows, running more than two years late, is boosting demand for memory chips made by companies such as Samsung Electronics Co. Vista will increase sales of personal computers worldwide after its release next year as people buy new computers that can support the operating system, Rollins said.

"Everyone is going to want Vista when it's ready," Rollins said. Round Rock, Texas-based Dell is vying for top place among the world's PC makers with Hewlett-Packard Co.

Vista will require "at least" 1 gigabyte of system memory, Microsoft's Web site says, one-third more than the average 750 megabytes currently installed in most new PCs, according to a Sept. 19 report by Citigroup Inc. It costs $185 to upgrade a Dell Dimension E520 desktop computer to 2 gigabytes of memory from 512 megabytes, according to the company's Web site. That is more than triple the cost of upgrading the PC to 1 gigabyte.

Because it shouldn't be news. If MSFT wants to make an O/S that requires 4 GB's of RAM, more power to 'em. The consumer is the one who has become hooked on their product; that's not MSFT's fault.

If folks don't like it, they can always get Ubuntu or other *nix O/S.

Yeah.. to me I kind of look at it like .. "If I want to buy Half-Life 3.. It's going to require more Ram"

That's just the way of things.

"I can't see any reason a personal computer will ever need more then 640kb of RAM." - Bill Gates - Paraphrased.

You guys are going to like Vista. Yes it requires huge resources, but it runs incredibly smooth and it's stunningly beautiful.

I tested it and hated the system-pulled it off 3 machines in less than a day. And this was the 3 round of testing. I'm sticking with XP Pro till the bitter end at this point.

yeah i heard that if you upgrade it sucks ass. YOu have to do a full install to get it to run ok.

Still, I'm in your boat. I don't trust it yet but it's pretty...

I think I'm going to upgrade my XP box to 2 gigs and enjoy the performance boost before even thinking about Vista. I don't need pretty.

I'm running Vista RC2 right now. After all the head aches of installing it(system refused to take it! it is a newish Intel mobo) , the machine runs like crap.

I'm definitely sticking to XP SP2 for as long as I can. Vista doesn't add any value for me, and runs _too_damn_slow.

Specs on my test machine:
3.2 ghz P4, 2 gigs ram, SATA 120gm seagate disk. What else could you want? screw vista!

Pictorial evidence. The only thing running is Internet Explorer. See how Vista uses a half-gig of ram, and also pages a half-gig. what a fat american pig

time for a laugh -- just went to a micosoft connections event today . I asked how much memory was needed and was told . you need a min of 128 mb video card .
but they didnt know how much system memory. they said it should run fine with 512 mb .

i also asked about -more memory needed if you upgrade from lets say home version to pro version ,they had no idea if the os would need more ram to run or not .also all five versions of Vista . but your activation code will decide what version you are loading ! also on the server version the unit will send ms a product verifation .if not done you will only be able to IE for one hour to send ms the info they want -or the system will shut down till the next day . and do it again give you IE only for 1 hour .if i heard this right !

Nope you heard right. If you do not have a valid key (i.e. a real copy), they will actually restrict your usage of the system. Basically, you'll only be able to have 3 windows open, etc.

I actually think it's a good thing. That gives pirates something to worry about, although I have a feeling it might get cracked relatively quickly.

No, no copy of Vista is out other than the beta. I've also heard from MS folks that the Vista Ultimate beta doesn't include any of the "Ultimate" features yet.

no to clear this up he said the golden /final version is set to go to press but not been shipped to anyone yet .and that will have all five versions on it .but your key will make the decision as to what version to load on your machine .so in short if you buy the basic home version .and decide later to update all you do is pay microsoft over the phone by credit card .and you reload the cd into your computer and add the keycode they give you and you can be loading vista ultimate in like 2 mins .off the same cd that you loaded home version .
