I hate that spline tool too. I hope he had a sketch pad.

Sketching the old fashioned way is a lot faster.
I don't see any advantage using his method, except that color changes can be made a lot easier.

But if you start out with a pencil and paper, make your mods and them import it into MSPaint or another program you could do the same thing.

Another thing: Vanishing point perspective is very difficult using these simplified programs. A trained eye can pick up the difference.

I think you're missing the point JMK. If he wanted the most efficient sketching software for drawing a car he would probably use a CAD program, or at least something like Macromedia (Adobe) Freehand. This is kinda like sketching the Brooklyn Bridge with an etch-a-sketch. It's not the most practical medium to use, however it requires a lot of skills that even the best artists don't possess.

My sister in law challenged one of her artist friends, who had never used MS paint, to create an image based on a photo using ONLY MS paint.

Original photo:

MS Paint:

She watched him do it. There was nothing taken from the source image!

I think a big part of it is just artistic ability. The tool is secondary.
