I have had success on occasion opening corrupted MS Office files with Open Office. Try downloading Open Office (http://openoffice.org) and/or Abiword (http://www.abisource.com) (both are free) and see if they'll open it.

You might also try Google Docs and Spreadsheets (https://www.google.com/accounts/Serv...2_lf ty&nui=1) or Zoho (http://writer.zoho.com/jsp/home.jsp) though I've never used either one.

By any chance, has the font been changed to something strange?

Make a copy of the file in question, change the extension of (rename) the copy from .doc to .txt, and them try to open the .txt file with Notepad...

Sorry about that man. I remember it happening to my papers in college. It really sucks. Hope you figure out a way to fix it.
