Linux OS

OK I got a computer that is not heavily used and it's an older computer. Probably 1 ghz processor with perhaps 256 to 512 MB of ram. It's fairly slow running XP so I want to install linux on it. What is the most popular and most up to date version that would work on this machine and would also not bog it down?

Hmm, depends. Do you care how it looks? If not I'd say use a version that runs fully in RAM like Puppy or Damn Small Linux.

Vector Linux is Slackware based and is supposed to be lightweight, but I've never used it.

Perhaps give knoppix a try.

Xubuntu is Ubuntu using the XFCE (lightweight) window manager rather than GNOME. It might be worth a look.

From their site:

Quote:
Xubuntu is a complete GNU/Linux based operating system with an Ubuntu base. It is lighter on system requirements and tends to be more efficient than Ubuntu with GNOME or KDE, since it uses the Xfce Desktop environment, which makes it ideal for old or low-end machines, thin-client networks, or for those who would like to get more performance out of their hardware.

I like Puppy as well - http://puppyos.com

Ubuntu has proven to be solid and stable so far. Not sure of your experience with Linux, but it's a good bet for newbies.

I would also recommend Mandriva (Formerly Mandrake). It's a great learner OS ( I started with it), and there is a lot of information out there to help you when you get stuck.
