Question Legally downloading mp3's

I'm new to this whole mp3 player thing. Does anyone know where I can pay for individual songs that I download without paying a monthly subscription and the songs will work on my mp3 player? I also want to be able to burn them on to CD's for the car. I heard there are some places where the song expires after awhile. I obviously don't want that.

I know iTunes let you download songs individually but I don't have an ipod. Will it still work on my regular mp3 player?

Thanks in advance!

Some here will question the legality of this site, but check out www.allofmp3.com. They have a standalone application you can run on your PC, AllTunes. Inexpensive d/l of mp3's that you can burn to use in your car, will also work on your mp3 player. Songs don't "expire", either.

Good luck!

Not sure what format they are, but check Walmart.com too. I know they have music for downloads.

You can also use iTunes with the Apple store and download the copy protected .acc (?) format. You can then use iTunes to burn them to an Audio CD and then rip the Audio CD to MP3.

Yeah I know it's a bit complicated, but it does work.

It depends on the player. Some do and some don't you should be able to look in the manual to see if it supports WMA. Also if you just search on google I am sure you could fine a free piece of software that can rip the WMA to MP3.

I highly recommend! Have been using them for +6 months and have been extremely satisfiedl. Can get whole albums for $2-$4 depending on the encoding format and quality you chose.

I haven't yet checked out AllTunes, but their standard service is impeccable and the best priced of anywhere.

I've found an issue in quality with allofmp3.com, some stuttering and such.

Maybe I just got 3 bad downloads (I can't see how that would have happened to three different albums).

Where are you seeing this info? I clicked the link you provided and got the following:
Quote:
Credit or debit card

We accept payment made by credit or debit cards.
Just specify the card type and payment sum. The money is added immediately upon card authorization.

The minimum one-time payment by credit card for the service is $10.
If for some reason the site is unable to provide you the service, you will be refunded the remainder of your balance within 7 business days after you apply for such refund.

For security purposes, the card numbers are not kept by the company.
I've added funds to my account 3 or 4 times and have never had a problem doing it with my mastercard.

Following that link, try and refill your account. When you get to the point where it should ask you for credit card info, the message will appear.

Found something for you guys...

Quote:
LOS ANGELES - Visa International and MasterCard Inc. have stopped accepting credit card transactions for purchases of online music made on a Russian Web site accused of selling music illegally, officials for both payment systems said Wednesday.

San Francisco-based Visa asked member banks not to process purchases from AllofMP3.com as of Sept. 1, said Simon Barker, a spokesman for the company.

"The action Visa has taken is in line with legislation passed in Russia and with basic international copyright and intellectual property norms," Barker said.

MasterCard, the No. 2 payment system in the world behind Visa, ceased accepting credit card purchases on the Web site in early August, said Chris Harrall, a spokesman for the Purchase, N.Y.-based company. "MasterCard does not tolerate the use of its network for illegal activity," Harrall said.

Charles Martin, a Washington-based spokesman for Moscow-based Mediaservices, which owns AllofMP3, confirmed that Visa had suspended payment processing services on the site, but he was not aware of any other payment vendors who had decided to do so.

AllofMP3.com typically charges under $1 for an entire album and just cents per track. By contrast, an album at Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes Music Store and other licensed services typically costs about $10 and a song 99 cents.

On Wednesday, a message on the payment section of the Web site notified visitors that credit card payment was not available "at the moment." The site directed prospective customers to make a credit card payment on another site, alltunes.com.

That site listed that it accepted payments in Visa and EuroCard/MasterCard. However, Visa shut down payment processing for that site as of Oct. 1, Barker said.

It was unclear to what extent the actions taken by the credit card companies had affected business on the Web site.

There was no mention of it by Mediaservices officials during an online news conference on Tuesday, although Vadim Mamotin, the firm's director general, said through a translator that the company's business dispute with major recording companies and other copyright owners "has hurt our business."

The Web site operator maintains that by paying royalties to a Russian licensing group, the Web site is in compliance with Russian laws. The music industry contends that the Russian licensing group doesn't have the authority to collect and distribute royalties.

When I last refilled my balance on 12/8 I was redirected to a third party site (e-centru.com) who conducted the transaction for allofmp3. I used my MC with no problem and my balance was updated with no problem. I just logged in and checked, it's doing the same thing now.

CREDIT CARD TRANSACTIONS ARE WORKING AT ALLOFMP3.COM.

Yes, but I use a temporary/limited use number generator for everything online (Russian or not).

If you're using an illegal site and paying for downloads, why not use Limewire? It's free.

AllofMP3.com crashed my browser.

I used to use Limewire but it was getting harder for me to find mp3's on it. Every other one I downloaded was an audio message that I was doing something illegal. Boo!

That's why I decided to go legit. Walmart.com is still works for me!

I have seen All of Mp3's website (as well as been reading the legal battle regarding it) and my guess is that on on AllOfMp3.com you can get high quality album downloads for cheap, vs. through a P2P program, you don't really know what you're getting, and you are subject to only downloading what others are sharing, song by song.

Well not quite. If your serious about quality, you would rarely download individual songs with a P2P. Instead you just search for the compressed files of full album. The name of the zip file usually indicates the bitrate and often the encoder. This way all the songs in the album are of consistent quality. P2P is slow, but it works.

...oh and it's illegal so don't do it!

Exactly!

Plus their site is very well designed. One feature I use a lot is 'preview full album'. It streams a 30 second preview of every song on an album and is very handy for deciding wether I want the full album or just a few tracks. One click and you get a summary of the whole album.

You get only exactly what you want and expect. You can chose between MP3, WMA, OOG, MPEG-4 and MPC formats all in 128, 192, or 320kbps bitrates. No mislabelled files, no virus concerns. If you want the best value choose 128, best quality choose 320 (something you'll NEVER find on P2P), or happy medium chooose 192. Overall it is much much quicker than P2P (like 10 minutes to find, buy, and download an album versus who knows how long... hours? w/ Limewire et al). Plus it is legal- even though RIAA is harassing Allofmp3 it won't get them anywhere, and they're not coming after the customers (i.e. you and me) like they've done to P2P users in the past.

All of that for pennies per song, sounds like a damn good deal to me.

Now if they only accepted credit cards.

Hey, I think you can preview the entire song via AllTunes. I'll have to doublecheck, but you may want to take a look yourself.
