Website Suggestions...
I have a friend that owns a consignment furniture store. I want to set her up a simple-to-maintain website with a gallery where she can easily upload photos/captions of her inventory.
There won't be any e-commerce (folks will have to come in to buy). She's not computer-stupid, but she's no power-user. This'll have to be easy. I'm no webmaster - I've built a couple of real simple sites using css templates and freeware tools, but I am certainly no guru. I know some web hosts have some WYSIWYG packages to do this, but the ones I've seen look cheesy and aren't the easiest to use. I am thinking about getting her a little cheap web space and doing Joomla with some sort of gallery plugin. I don't have any experience with it, but it looks easy, and I have some web space I can put it on for experimentation. It looks like I could probably put something together for cheap that didn't look cheap, and she'd probably be able to maintain it herself once I showed her how and documented the steps. Suggestions? Again, I want cheap and easy that doesn't look too cheesy. I'm not looking for cool widgets or flashy effects - something clean and simple. If it requires Dreamweaver or Photoshop to pull it off, forget it. I also no nothing of PHP or SQL.

joomla's pretty easy. I think the UI is decent, if all you're updating is content.
i have a friend who uses xoops, because joomla's too heavy, and xoops is easier to deal with and manage. |

mechmike, is the main aspect of her site just going to be a gallery? Is she going to be updating the gallery mostly? If so, joomla seems like overkill. I would suggest getting a webhost that has modular web apps that you and she can use to address your particular needs. For example, I set up a website recently through Dreamhost for a friend who needed a blog and a gallery. Through them, I was able to set up a Wordpress blog and a Gallery gallery. It took me like 15 minutes to set up everything, and they are very happy with what they can do with it. Also, should you decide to go with Joomla, it is a one-click install there as well.
Let me know if you have some more questions. Good luck!

Yeah... I envision a "business card" style website with a gallery. I looked at the 1&1 gallery, and it is cheesy. It is a shame because I like and have used 1&1 for a long time. It's good to know that Dreamhost has a decent one. If you have a referral code PM it to me. PM me the URL of the site you set up, if you don't mind. I'd love to have a look at it, and I'd also love to show it to her as an example. And, as always, thanks for the suggestions. |

I think I'm gonna go with a simple (open-source CSS template) website and a link to Picasa Web Albums. It looks easy enough for her to manage.

It's all good, bro - thanks! Her store's moving this weekend so I have to deal with the hardware/network aspect of things first. |
