Rant - Adobe Acrobat
I have Adobe Acrobat Standard (V 8.1 - the latest and fully updated) installed. I had a five page .doc file created in Word 2003 with Arial font and no graphics, hyperlinks or anything weird. I wanted to convert this .doc into a .pdf, so I used the nifty "Convert to Adobe PDF" right-click menu option from within Windows Explorer.
The document converted, but it was formatted and spaced differently. : I then deleted the newly created .pdf and went to this website: https://www.pdfonline.com/convert_pdf.asp I uploaded the file and converted it for free - perfectly... Imagine - a free service that kicked the absolute s**t out of a $300 (+/-) piece of software... Go figure...

I've had good luck using a free "print to pdf" option from http://www.cutepdf.com/

Yeah, and I have that (or something similar) installed on other computers that I use. This was on my work PC. I didn't want to install a "print to pdf" program on top of the already-installed Acrobat 8 Standard for fear of some kind of conflict. I had seen but never used any of the online services and was very pleasantly suprised... |

I'm with you, TS. I dabble in OSS and promote it wherever possible.
Again, this was done on a work-issued computer. OSS wasn't an option. Had it been a home project I would have created the file in OpenOffice Writer and gone right to .pdf from there had I been on either my Windows box or my Kubuntu box. I also could have done it on my Puppy Linux box... Last edited by mechmike0034 : 07-17-2007 at 06:23 PM. |
