NOOOOOOOOOOOO! Bastids!

For those of you unfamiliar, AutoPatcher was a great app. It included all MS patches and hotfixes for every NT-based OS. They had also just done the same for the Office suites.

This is an invaluable resource for anyone who works on Windows boxes as you could use it to patch a box offline.

MS just told them to take their download page down... :

Just curious. Is this site used for unregistered versions of Windows?

I suppose it could be. Autopatcher XP includes WGA, though.

I still want to see even pirated Windows versions patched since unpatched boxes can be more easily compromised to do things like join bot herds or launch DDOS attacks.

Funny thing is, MS staffers and MVPs used Autopatcher and "unofficially" recommended it.

Thats probably what they felt and why they took it down.

A lot of people used it for computers with no internet connection and also, its a lot easier to load a many megabyte patch off a cd then to download it slowly over the internet. These people were actually help ease the burden of MS support...

Oh well. i guess every nice thing can be used for evil and then will be taken away.

Aren't most of the patches for security reasons? If you're not visiting any websites, why would you require any updates?

Besides, you can get SP1 and SP2 on a CROM directly from Microsoft for practically nothing.

How about for compatibility with an updated program? A new program or program update may require XPSP2 to run, for example...

Yes, but take a wild guess how many post-SP2 updates there are for Windows XP... I wouldn't want to download them, even on a high-speed connection.

Dammit, I had made myself a mental note to check out AutoPatcher after you (mechmike) mentioned it a week or two ago. I guess I'm too late, grr.

I remember a study somewhere (don't remember where, so take this with a grain of salt) that an unpatched box on the Internet took 20 minutes to get some type of malicious software. Takes far longer than that to install patches.

Downloads directly from MS to make a CD. Not as good as autopatcher, but it works really well.
