Home Design Software

Many years ago, I remember there were quite a few programs that would let you design a home and envision what it would be like to remodel/renovate a room or two (or the whole house).

I'm curious if there are still some good software programs like this. I'm looking to renovate my basement, but want a way to visualize it before actually going ahead with the renos.

Any advice?

Google Sketchup is free and might be a good start. I've never used it, but I know a few people that have and like it.

For the non-architect, it is probably the best choice you have, especially considering it is free. It is super easy to learn, yet very capable of creating any space you can imagine. Even emong professional architects, it widely used as a quick and easy way to explore and imagine an unbuilt space. That's coming from a practicing architect.

I just saw that program recently online with a large rebate which brought it down to approx. $10.
