Cool

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that after I'm done playing CPU intensive games in win98, the CPU is not cooling down like it 'sposed to. It used to cool down to idle after a minute or two. Not anymore. I'm especially curious if anyone with Radeon cards may have noticed this, since I've updated my video drivers to the newest beta...

Anyway, win2k still works fine and idles the cpu as normally.

Anyone have an ideas?

This sounds pretty wierd...
I guess you made sure your CPU cooling fan was still running strong?

What brand and model cpu cooler are you using?

Are you keeping the room temperature warmer than you used to?

Have you added any new hardware?

clarification...

...I'm sure its software. Win2k works fine and idles the CPU normally. It's in Win98 that the CPU stays full speed.

I have an All-in-Wonder Radeon, and have had problems with their beta drivers and CPU usage. The problem I had was that everytime I used the TV tuner or their File Player, it used about 96% of my cpu. They told me to upgrade my DVD player. Once I did that it worked fine.

Have you tried it with the retail drivers? If that doesn't work use system monitor, to check your cpu usage. If your cpu usage is high, then you know that something is running in the background and slowing down the cooling process.

Post not the video....

I uninstalled tons of stuff before I found that it was a left over driver set from....ACURSED WINGATE!!!!! It kept scanning my network, continuous, keeping the CPU at 100% unless something more important was asking for the cpu. The stupid thing poluted my registry and my registry cleaners wouldn't remove it automatically.

Win98 is my clean OS for gaming, so I reinstalled-only took a couple of hours. Now games play better than ever, and my cpu idles back to 4 degress above ambient after I'm done playing.

Wingate: from the depths I stab at thee!
