I have never used linux before, and i want to learn it. i have an old 486 with disk drives, and an 8x cd rom. its running windows 3.1, and has 2 hard drives (500MB each). After i backup my data, i am going to reformat the drives, and i was wondering if anyone could tell me how to get started with Linux from there.

The first thing you want to do is pick a distribution. Since you're a linux newbie, Mandrake is probably the best for you; supposedly it's the easiest to set up. Head over to linuxnewbie.org and check out the NHF (newbieized help files) section. There's a ton of easy-to-understand docs there. And come on back if you're stuck!
