I installed windows 2000 a few weeks ago and when I try to play mp3's it crashes about half of the time. I'm using winamp with a turtle beach montego 2 soundcard. The track will always start playing, but the rest of the computer freezes. The computer won't respond to ctrl-alt-delete and the mouse won't work either. I've tried reinstalling winamp and the soundcard drivers that came with windows. Any help would be appreciated.

I tried the new drivers, but they didn't fix the problem. I think I'll try to reinstall windows since it has also crashed when copying files and using the windows explorer.

take a look at your memory...
...8 times out of ten when explorer crashes...you have cpu/memory issues.

the trick to installing them in win2k...
...is to check your versions. Make sure your driver version is 5.12, not 5.00.... Win2k will not update the drivers automatically because it is a "multifuncion platform" device. So, check your driver versions. If they are not current, the drivers didn't install and you need to follow the instructions at vortexofsound.
BTW: I've never had any problems with my sound card, and this is the second Aureal card I owned. Both work flawlessly...except in certain games that just do a half-arsed attempt at 3D sound (TRIBES!!!!!) |

I am using driver version 5.12.2559 and have a P3 550 with 128 mb of ram. I have another simple question. How do you prevent windows from automatically loging you on? Thanks

I am using same setup with win2k sp2. I have no problems and I AM using default drivers which other replies have slandered. Sounds like a problem with resources, perhaps a memory leak caused by something else running in background
