Question

I had just upgraded from Win98 to Win2000 Pro. However, I made the mistake of forgetting to uninstall Norton AV before the upgrade.

Now, my computer freezes completely after I log-in. This is about the time Norton would have been started. I've tried booting in Safe mode but no luck.

Is there a way for me to manually prevent Norton AV from loading after I log in? I'd like to uninstall it and reinstall the correct version.

I seem to remember a friend telling me there is a file I could edit to stop programs from loading at login.

Thanks

I think it might be the system.ini file

Well, there are a couple of things to try. First, try logging in as a different user (if you set up multiple accounts). If Norton is running in a startup group, it may not be in every profile. Another thing you can do is try booting into the recovery console (you need admin password to do this), and then just rename the directory where the Norton files are (hope you know how to get around in DOS). Boot normally (you may get error messages about not finding files) then name the directory back to what it was & run the uninstall program.

I checked system.ini and it's not it.

After (manually) uninstalling Norton AV, I've discovered that's not it. It appears as if it is something else that is run during startup although my startup menu is empty.

Any ideas?
