Right now, I have 2 large enough hard drives (20 & 30 gig) in my system. I'm building a new system, and don't want to buy another hard drive....
So, what I want to do is have the 20 gig on my old(current) system, and the 30 gig on the new system. Currently, I have the 30 gig as my boot (I dual boot ME & Win2k). Is there any way to copy the whole hard drive from the 30 gig to the 20 gig, so that I don't have to go through the tedious process of reinstalling ALL my software? This means that it would have to copy all the partitions (4 or 5), as well as all the data within the 30 gigger... Also, would I theoretically be able to just plop the 30 gigger into my new system and have it work????(true test of plug and play support on windows, no? =P) thanx in advance. |

You bet...
Your best shot is Norton's Ghost. If that isn't an option, use EZ-Drive, often bundled with most hard drives. Ghost offers you the ability to copy specific partitions, but EZ Drive makes drive copies.
Because of GA's anti-piracy rules, I cannot tell you where to dl Ghost, (but I will if you email me) but it is easy to find if you look. EZ Drive you should be able to get a copy from a store tech at a Circuit City or similar store or download from Maxtor or Western Digital's web site. And...you last question...normally, yes. However, some older OS's need the partition to be "activated." You can do this with Partition Magic or with a boot disk with "fdisk" on it. Hope this helps. Good luck.
