IE pop-ups when IE is closed

So I sit down at my computer this morning after leaving the computer on all night, and my monitor is covered with dozens of pop-ups for porn sites. I had to reboot, and then I went to get some breakfast. When I came back, they had already started to come back. I had IE closed both times this happened. Now every 10-15 minutes, a new porn pop-up will load, regardless of whether or not IE is loaded. My home page was also changed and my ability to change my IE options disabled, but I managed to delete the registry value for that little bug. However, I have no idea how to stop these pop-ups from arrising, and I also have no idea how this whole thing started. I don't recall going to any porn sites in the last couple years, although I did wander onto a few *cough* serial number *cough* sites. Any suggestions on how to remove this annoyance?

Ouch...

go to www.adaware.com and download their ad removal system, maybe that will help. And also, did it change your homepage? If it did, set it back, and your search page too. If you can spot the address that IE pops up the banner with, try right clicking and properties, you can search for that specific address in your registry, and take it out. Hope that helps.

thanks for the advice, I didn't find a virus but I still haven't completely solved the problem. For now downloaded a pop-up killer that closes them before they have a chance to do any damage. Thanks again.
