help setting up ftp
ok, i havent set up a ftp server for a few years now and i dont ever remember setting up one on win2k. on top of that im on my dorms network which SUCKS big time and i have yet to figure that out. ive installed iis 5.0 and started my http and ftp services and finally figured out my ip address (i think). my ip isnt static, but i think it stays within range of 2 or 3. my network ip address is static and my computer name is BMW. when i do a trace on my ip, it always returns to 65.114.94.196 or 65.114.94.195. and my computers ip on the network is 192.172.2.123 always. the only way i get any response is by going to http://192.172.2.123 and i get a dialogue for a name, password and domain. i thought that going to \\dorm server\bmw would work but with no such luck. is there something i need to do to zonealarm to make this work? thanks for any help
something i thought that was a little strange was that ive gotten over 150 hits and sent out over 200kb and ive only set up my server less than an hour ago. i dont have any files shared so i dont know why all this data is being sent out. |

the \\workgroup\computer is Windows networking. Set that up by right clicking folders (in regular windows explorer) and going to sharing. That is a totally diff. protocol than FTP. the 200kb is small - probably port scans or just random packets floating around if you are on a repeated network (as opposed to a switched network). i'd say dont worry about it |

Well I have a ftp setup on w2k and it was fairly not complicated. . . I personally like ftp serv-u 'cause its simple and small. Anyhow since your ip isn't static, it won't work. What you need is a permanent dns that will point to your dynamic ip. That should solve your problems.

well, ive set up an ftp using windows ftp server, cuteftp and warftp on win98 before with a dynamic ip before, but right now, i cant even get access to my ftp over the web. i have gotten the http to work, but i lost that too. i think the problem lies within my dorms network and possibly zonealarm. i think my dorm may be using a NAT. |

ok, ive gotten to work perfectly over the dorm network. i can get it at http://192.172.2.123, ftp://192.172.2.123, http://bmw/ and ftp://bmw/. so the network isnt a problem. the problem may lie in 2 different spots, either i cant access it from the internet, or i need to figure out how to format the url so i can get to my comp. my ip is pretty static as it has been 65.114.94.196 for a while now (my dorms block is 65.114.94.192 - 65.114.94.223).

well, you should be ok with an dynamic ip address, as long as you do ftp://my.ip.add.ress type of thing, instead of trying to use a domain name....
if u do wanna do a domain name thing, there are programs out there.... http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0...st-7-2.7487494 seems like it would do the trick, though I'm not giving any reviews on it..... as for why it won't work...the fact that your machine is now a win2k machine shouldn't affect it.. the only thing I can think of is if you have a router, than you have to make sure that you open up the ftp ports.... perhaps the dorms are blocking those ports as well, though I would think that they wouldn't.... |

i dont have a router, but i dont know the it guys are doing downstairs. as for ftp ports, im pretty sure i have opened them on my firewall, as i do have access through my network. my dorm may be blocking ftp ports to save bandwidth, but i doubt they would block http ports. that no-ip.com program seems like a cool idea, ill have to try it out when i get this thing to actually work. by the way, what are the ftp and http ports which need to be open? im pretty sure i have them open, but i may be wrong. |

Like I said before man, you need a dns. Go get one at www.dns2go.com for free. There are many other services but that one works.

standards are 80 for http and 21 for ftp, but if you wanna be extra sneaky and hide them from skriptkiddiezzz use something else. of course, then you'll need to provide that port with the address when you tell everyone about your david hasselhoff mp3 server and fan page. |
