If your picture are the Background part, copy it by dragging the layer down on Žnew layerŽ and the lock is open...

In the layer window (normally on the right side of the screen), there is a little lock - click it - or, just copy the layer to a new layer and youre done...
(I use PS6.01 at the moment, but as far I remeber, it is the same for earlier versions too...)

check to make sure you're working in RGB and not Indexed color mode (.gifs are indexed).

Go up to Image -> Mode -> RGB (i believe that's the right order)

that should do you. then just make sure that you're not working on the background layer.

So are you saying that you can't simply select the locked layer and uncheck the little checkbox at the top of the layers pallet?

Remember, background layers are always locked by default.

6.0/6.01 has a problem that you can't unlock background layers...

eaiset thing to do, is make a new layer, go to the background layer, ctrl+a (to select it all) then ctrl+c (to copy it all) then click on the new layer you created and ctrl+v )to paste it all)

then you can throw away your background layer and your new layer can be locked and unlocked...

Hey Raider007... get back to KK... heh

Double click the background layer, hit ok. THAT'Sthe easiest way to convert a background layer into a regular layer.
