Burnt MP3s Won't Play

A couple weeks ago a friend burnt some mp3s off my computer using Nero. The mp3s weren't converted, the purpose was just to move the files to his computer. When he got home he called and said none of the files would play, although Windows Explorer indicated the files seemed to be burnt correctly to the disc (read: They had correct sizes, etc).

I tried playing the original files on my computer and they all worked fine, so i just dismissed it as a fluke. But my father called a couple days ago requesting help with the exact same problem! I asked my friend for the 'bum' disc to take a look at it and have verified that the files simply will not play.

I've tried copying the burnt files to my hard drive to remove the CD-ROM from the problem, but the files still don't play. I've tried them in Winamp and Windows Media Player without any luck either.

My father's using Windows 98 and my friend and i have Windows 2000. My friend burnt the files using Nero 5.5 on my computer, and i believe my father's using Easy CD Creator.

This is really bizzare! Has anyone ever experienced this, or does anyone have any ideas?

Ok it doesn't play in Music Match.

Maybe be a bad burning job or bad cd. Reburn on new cd and see what happens. If the same try a different cdr media. If the same try different software.

You'll get to the bottom of what caused it only by testing again.

did you burn to CDr or RW - some drives have problems reading music off of CDRW.

Also, nero automatically converts the files to wave, so I assume you told it not to...I'd try it in wave format.

They were burnt to a CD-R disc. I haven't had any problems with that disc make either. Everything else i burn works fine, just this one disc my friend made and the one my father's been telling me about don't work.

Since i didn't burn it, i'm not sure. The files still have the .mp3 extension, but i'll try renaming one to a .wav when i get home. I'll also try reburning the files and let you know what happens.

That is some weird stuff right there. I couldn't get it to play. I renamed it, still no luck.

Damn, i hate it when you submit a message and get an error! You always end up losing the whole thing and having to type it all over again.

Well, i tried renaming the file to a .wav and Winamp couldn't read it. Then i tried reburning the original files using the same O/S and Nero installation and burner & media combination and the files burnt to the disc can be read.

I'm sure my Nero settings ar correct because i burn MP3 files all the file to transfer them to my computer at work. What really gets me is that it's happened to two different people with two different versions of Windows with using different burners and burning utilities and two different media types. Yet i couldn't find a single refer to the problem anywhere on the internet!

Am i to believe that the laws governing MP3 burning don't apply to Indiana?

Oh...you didn't mention the indiana thing.

No...natural law doesn't apply to Indiana.

i've been having the same problems with the newest version of nero. strange. it happens more often when copying files from cd's made with other burning software.
For example i copied a cd that my boss had made using HP cd creator, i tried to copy with nero, and it created 3 bad cd copies before it made a good one.
I'm going back to 5.048 i thinks for nero. it never did this to me.

also, when i copy cd's that someone else made, i try not to use CD copier any more, i just 'create new cd' and include all the contents of the old cd. good luck

Even though it appears to be a random fluke, i still wanted to perform a binary comparison of the burnt MP3 (bad) to the original MP3.

Using 'cmp' from UnixDos (Unix utilities for the M$ platform), the binary comparison returned these results:

Although the files are the same size, all the bytes in the broken burnt copy are the same (i.e. hexadecimal value of 0x00).

try WinISO to try to extract the files from the raw data. i had a similar problem where i couldnt read some files off a disc (got a cyclical redundancy error) and i got it through this program. i think you will need to extract the iso from the disc, then you can read it.
