Morpheus: Dead or Alive
Anyone got the 411 on Morpheus/KaZaA?
As of yesterday, my Morpheus client reports that my version (1.3.3) is too old, and to download the most recent version from www.musiccity.com. But i can't get a response from www.musiccity.com and no mirror download sites report that a new version of Morpheus has been released. Is something major like a system/client upgrade underway, or am i the only one experiencing these problems? James |

This thread sounds like a repost, but anyways. Morpheus is workin fine for me too =) The start page didn't load up, but after 15 seconds, it connected to servers, and surely 'nuf, over 400k users still logged on.

I use Kazaa and every time I open it up it prompts me to upgrade to a newer version. The page says it is because they are under new management yadda yadda yadda.
The way I see it, the old version works fine without installing a new round of spyware etc. |

In case you haven't read, here's the word from the main page loaded by Morpheus (which apparently isn't the same as the main page of www.musiccity.com):
We understand that some of you are having difficulties connecting to your Morpheus User Network. As you know from recent newsletters, Morpheus has been preparing to substantially upgrade the Morpheus software. Unexpectedly, one of our software providers made a significant upgrade to their technology that is currently incompatible with Morpheus. We share our Morpheus users' frustration with this action and are committed to getting you back up on the network as soon as possible. As a result, we are accelerating the release of our new Morpheus software and within days expect Morpheus users to enjoy the Morpheus Preview Edition. The Morpheus Preview Edition will provide enhanced capabilities, a new, easy-to-use interface and most importantly, will provide access to more search results. In addition, we want to assure our users that, unlike other peer-to-peer networks, we remain committed to a free software product without spy ware. We appreciate our users' loyalty to the Morpheus product and are committed to providing you with the best peer-to-peer network in the world. We appreciate your patience during this short transition. Please check back for exact availability to download the new Morpheus Preview Edition.... |

Here's the word from the main page again:
Morpheus Preview Edition will be available in two hours, check back to download software that allows you to connect to the Morpheus/Gnutella P2P network. So, apparently less than two hours from 9:30 Eastern, *BUT* you can download it right now from download.com! James Last edited by jameslee : 03-01-2002 at 07:29 PM. |

But, more importantly, what's up with the shift from using the KaZaA network to the Gnutella network as described here (Morpheus looks to Gnutella for help).
