Couldn't you just use ICS to share your AOL connection or am I misunderstanding your question?

ics doesnt work. maybe im configuring it wrong, but ive never had a problem with ics except when using aol.

i have 2 computers in my house. one which the rest of my family uses and mine. my whole family is on aol except me, but i do have access to it. im going to get my own isp in a few months and i absolutly do not want to install aol onto my computer.

What version of AOL are you trying to share? It seems like certain versions are easier to share than others.

Anyway, take a look at AnalogX Proxy. Hopefully, setting up this small proxy server on your machine with the AOL connection will work for you.

Good luck.

Not knowing what software you're running, it's really hard to tell where the problem lies. It could be the IRC client you're using, the proxy server (limitations), or even the version of the proxy server. I assume you've setup your IRC client to use a SOCKS proxy? If so, this might be one of the limitations of this free proxy server. Support for this feature may or may not come in the next version and who knows when that will be?

Depending on how much you need this capability, you could either try another proxy server that may provide better support, a different IRC client that you know works with a SOCKS-compliant proxy server, or you could try tackling ICS again. BTW, how are you connecting to the Internet?

Just remember this proxy server isn't full-fledged in the sense that it won't work with all the applications you throw at it. It's meant to work with most of the applications most of the people would mostly want to use on the Internet.

it seems that anologx proxy server is where the problem is. im using mIRC and when i connect to the irc server it wont let me use an unsecured proxy and disconnects me. i use dial up to connect to the internet.

as far as ics goes ive tried everything i know, but that doesnt mean that there isnt something i dont know. its not super important that i get on the GA chatline as it would keep me online even more .

i might try BrowseGate3
they claim that its a NAT server. that should give me some more security as software goes.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I think I read somewhere that this would be included in the next major release but again, who knows when that would be?

I ask this because there is currently a limitation with the TCP/IP protocol under Windows 9x/ME which will affect ICS. AOL installs (I believe) two of its own adapters under the network settings. Also, you probably have a dial-up adapter (for obvious reasons) as well as a network adapter under your network settings as well. Now, the question is, are there any other adapters installed under the network settings. If so, the TCP/IP protocol won't bind to any more than four adapters at a time. Therefore, you would have to get the number of adapters down to four before you even start to get ICS to work.

Also, which adapter do you configure ICS to share? I think you have to share the AOL dial-up adapter.

Great! Let us know how it works for you. Good luck.

that must be why i cant use ics with aol, i never thought about win98 not being able to bind more than 4 adapters at a time.

yeah, aol uses 3 or four adapters by it self. i think the one i should have shared is the PPP adapter since that is the one which is assigned the ip address when i sign on.

im using BrowseGate3 right now. its a lot more complicated, but its also much more complete, including a software NAT. i can get on the IRC server that i couldnt get on yesterday with no problems at all. I havent really gone through all the options yet so i dont know what all is in here, but i will figure it out soon enough. The BrowseGate3 software is free for 2 computers but any more than that requires registration. seems to be going pretty well so far.

Glad to hear that you finally found a solution for your problem. I also learned about a new piece of software in all of this.

thanks for all the help. one thing about BrowseGate, it seems that you have to log into the proxy if the server box restarts. i hope there is a way to automate this. thanks again

ok, so ics wont work with win98se, and aol wont work with win2k which is why im the only one in my family who uses 2k.
now ive installed xp pro on the computer with aol and it seems that aol is using the ppp adapter to connect to the internet. the only thing is that i cant get xp to let me share the ppp adapter or even list it in the Network Connections window. all it shows is a dummy aol connection under dial up and the lan connection under the LAN or High speed internet list

p.s. im only doing this to beat this damn system. i already got it to work perfectly with the proxy software.
