did a little google search

I found this

Disabling AIM ads

AOL recently blocked many open-source clones of its Instant Messenger (AIM) program because these clones do not include AIM's buddy list advertisement. AIM tells the user to visit AOL.com and download the latest version of AIM. There can be only one reason for this: since these clones of AIM do not have an apparent negative impact on the network, the reason must be greed.

In a previous article, we offered a method of disabling AIM's buddy list ad banner. Unfortunately, the latest versions of AIM generate an error if the .ocm file responsible for displaying ads is deleted. However, we have learned of a new fix that will not remove the .ocm file but will still keep AIM from loading the file.

First, right-click on the AIM icon in your system tray and exit. You cannot remove the ad banner while AIM is loaded in memory.

In your AOL Instant Messenger directory, open aim.odl using Notepad. Find the section that appears as below:
on_group(5)

{
load_ocm advert required
}
on_group(11)
{
load_ocm advert required
}

This is the code that loads the advert.ocm file. Simply place a semi-colon in front of the load_ocm lines, and the buddylist ad is disabled. The semi-colon "comments out" that line of code, so that AIM ignores that line. Here is what the new code should look like:
on_group(5)

{
; load_ocm advert required
}
on_group(11)
{
; load_ocm advert required
}

Save the file and start AIM. The ad banner will be replaced with a blank gray area.

Will AOL ever worry less about making a buck through AIM and spend more time fixing security problems in AIM and AOL? Of course not. But at least your AIM time can now be ad-free. It's the little things that count, right?

You're welcome.

hope this helps

When you upgrade aim, you have to edit the groups again otherwise the ads appear. Its nice to have those two blank spaces where the ads used to be. http://www.Techtv.com/screensavers had an article on it and how to disable them similar to the story posted.

yeah.. can't believe they used to have a limit of like 100.. maybe less before.. and then 160.. finally 200.. after complaining to them dozens of times.. I wonder why they don't just make it unlimited. Is it too much work on their servers?

there's an AIM add-on called AIM+ that I currently use. It will strip AIM of all the ads and it can also make the buddy and chat windows transparent via alpha blending. Another feature is the IM logging, if you want it to, it can log all your conversations so you can read them again later in the future. Just google AIM+, I forgot what the site is, I think it's made by BIG-O software.

actually. if you want a simple logging solution, and don't wanna put any add-ons, you can save your chat as a html file. in your buddy window, just click on File > Save.

yeah, but with AIM+ it's automatic so you don't have to do it everytime. Then it has the history viewer that lets you browse through your IM's. Ahhh yes, automation... gotta love it.

I noticed whenever I log conversations, I almost never look back to read them. And the ads aren't a big deal, I've learned to tune 'em out. I'd do fine without one extra program or add-on running on my system.
