Win2K Pro and XP Remote desktop

Is there a way to connect to WindowsXP's remote desktop with windows 2000 pro? Im thinking there should be a way to connect by installing a terminal services client on 2k pro, but i cant seem to figure it out. ive never used either terminal services or remote desktop before so i dont know much about either of them. thank for any help

Sure will. You just have to have an IP address on each machine. Fire it up, enable desktop sharing (you may have to reboot after this), then set up one as the host and connect the other one to it. Works like a champ.

Insert the XP Professional disc into the 2000 system and select 'Other' from the autorun menu. You can install Remote desktop on the 2000 machine this way.

Setting it up is pretty easy, right click 'My Computer' on the XP system and go to the 'Remote Desktop' tab. click the link to access help and it 's simple.

Here are some things to note:

1. The account you use to login must have a password. (I believe the password is disabled by default)

2. Turn on 'Fast User Switching'. It allows you to leave programs running and login as someone else: true multi-user.

There are some really nice feautes like automatically mounting local/remote resouces. (Mount your local printer from the remote desktop and printing from the remote desktop goes to your local printer. Mount your local drives so that you can simply copy to them from within the remote desktop. e.g. Local c: aliases as remote k:, then you can copy files to the local hard drive by copying from the remote drives to the aliased k: drive.) As always, with a router/firewall you can redirect the default port and connect via xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:zzzz where 'zzzz' is the port number.

bummer...

Ya can install the remote client on the win2k machine, but ya cant install the host.....

Ya can remotely manage a winxp box from a win2k box, but ya cant remotely manage a win2000 box from winxp box.....

I searched the MS website. Cant find anything. I wonder if terminal services on the win2k can work with desktop instead of servers......more more research...

Thx...

xp's remote desktop is so much better than pcanywhere. pca is so slow its aggrivating, but remote desktop runs to smoothly and quickly its like you are at the desktop itself. plus you get sound and can use alt + tab to switch windows.

Oh, yeah, that's the rub. Remote desktop is, thus far, XP Professional exclusive.

I know you can control other 2000 machines similarly with terminal services because i've seen students doing it all the time in the labs on campus, but i've never tried it.

I've almost migrated all my michines to XP Professional, so it's not a problem here.
